Apparently emo as a genre was born out of an intentional effort to de-nazi and detoxify the DC hardcore scene in the mid-80s. Seems Amy Pickering of Fire Party, along w/ Fugazi, Rites of Spring, and other hardcore bands actively promoted anti-violence, animal rights, and sexism awareness. Based af.

I enjoy thinking and reading about the evolution of musical genres. Obviously they change over time and breed offshoots and fusions. Genre is malleable and subjective, of course. "Emo" has just gone a way I've never really seen a genre word go before.

Kinda wanna write a book chronicling the journey of the word "emo" over the past 30 years.

When I first heard the word "emo" in like 2000, it was describing the music of Sunny Day Real Estate. I saw someone describe Linkin Park as "emo" the other day. That is a bonkers worth researching.
