Legendary Cryptids

There are dozens of cases of cryptid lost media, photos, videos and audio recordings of animals that may or may not exist. I investigated over forty of these cases to analyze if this evidence might be found one day, or if the whole thing was a hoax.

Duboisia santeng is a rare example of a prehistoric animal which was both named after a cryptid, AND was earnestly connected with that cryptid by its discoverer. Eugene Dubois named it after the santeng, an alleged tiny buffalo with chilli-shaped horns.

A friend of diver Jacques Cousteau once reported seeing a fish with a red and white checkerboard pattern while on a dive. Cousteau thought he didn't get enough oxygen- until he saw the same fish on another dive weeks later.

In the 1930s Rolf Rosenkvist and his dad were near the Eman River of Sweden when they spotted a massive eel 15 feet (4.5m) by torchlight. They tried and failed to catch it, though a later hunt succeeded. Villagers discarded it because it tasted bad.

AWESOME!

So, to my mind this should be classed as a cryptid as its existence is based on anecdotal evidence. Any cryptozoologists want to be in with a chance of actually discovering a new species for once should go looking for it. @bestcryptids.bsky.social
