I think they saw other franchises like the DCEU failing, so they pressed the big red “MCU Generic Trash” button. :(

And the main reason I think that is because this franchise had a very distinct and admirable vision it was going for. That vision wasn’t always executed well, but even at its worst, you could tell the intention was still there.

Then after KotM? Poof. Gone. I think they went into panic mode.

I don’t really think Wingard even has ANY kind of style. He’s a very “bare minimum” sort of director that, from what I’ve seen, is more focused on meeting a checklist of what people expect from his movies rather than just having any kind of vision.

imo, Legendary is just as much to blame.

What’s genuinely annoying is how the other movies were vague yet consistently interesting when developing their own history and lore.

Only for Legendary to fumble everything by trusting their established universe with ADAM WINGARD.

See and something like this would honestly annoy the hell out of me! But to your point, that’s genuinely the most sense you can really make of it right now with what we’ve been given to work with.

I don’t mind the vagueness of everything when it comes to its location because honestly I like that air of mystery to it. Even though they’re probably going to overexplain it eventually and ruin it.

Exactly. And with Legendary’s dedication to portraying Hollow Earth as this “harsh, survival of the fittest“ environment with constant lightning strikes and big fuck you snakes everywhere, it also begs the question.

i feel like a lot of people forget that. we’ve had a tonal shift akin to the showa era, sure, but in the same approximate duration of time — albeit shifted heavily towards *now* with the Duology releasing in such close proximity to itself — and less than half the total movies.

not to mention, even many of the "silly ones" had something to say. SOG was about fatherhood. AMA was about standing up to bullies. Vs Hedorah, obviously pollution. Not just mindless "smash the action figures together til one breaks"-style romps like i get the vibe from with the wingard duology.

I’ll appreciate them both for giving some satisfying kaiju fights and for appealing to my bias by making sure Godzilla won both fights with Kong.

But it’s a miracle that he didn’t crash the MV franchise altogether, the warning signs were right there.
