Also I think a lot of Americans don't know that it's happening at all. (due to various reasons, including how much journalism has been squished)

The disparate-realities thing makes it more disconcerting.

Was it her way of telling people that she didn't like how revealing their clothing was? Sort of a "your skirt is so short that your ass is hanging out in the breeze and could catch the sniffles" thing?

That sounds like the sort of adorable situation that it would be easy to falsely believe to be safe.

BOOKMARK THIS: Massachusetts launched a brand new ICE Reporting Portal.

Know that if federal agents operate unlawfully in Massachusetts, we will hold them accountable.

You can submit reports of potentially unlawful activity or misconduct by ICE agents at www.mass.gov/fedmisconduct

A squirrel who does not feel like cooperating could easily outrun, out-corner, and out-bite me.

it’s unreal how these grown-ass men had no problem destroying untold lives with chatGPT but go crying to a judge when people make fun of them online

There has been snow in my yard continuously since mid-January, but now I also have crocuses!

(two extremely bedraggled flowers huddled against the building and under a bush, but they count)

I think about this a lot.

There’s nothing more obnoxious than when people celebrate being an asshole or “just saying what everyone’s thinking”

Yeah, dude, most people have edgy thoughts, and learn to keep them inside. It’s called control. What you’re doing is like being really proud of constantly shitting yourself.

They don’t think women have agency, why would they think enemies in war would?

Not being snarky. This is abuser culture with nukes. A government by insecure overcompensating violent narcissists who’ve never faced consequences.

You don’t put those DOGE boys in prison, you’ll get a whole new batch.

Republicans are using kids as a smokescreen for what Big Tech lobbyists want: a national surveillance program to harvest our data with zero protections for people and their privacy.

We must fight this dangerous expansion of surveillance technology.

Black people don't vote *towards* Dems.

Black people vote *away* from racism.

Because racists are such conveniently bad people, being able to identify and vote away from racism, means that you also vote away from fascism, sexism, transphobia, grift, war, economic ruin, and climate destruction.🤷🏿‍♂️

Something that I think about less than I should but more than never is how the media backdrop to my toddlers lives is just full of this stuff that’s made by toxic characters, largely men, who write fantasy worlds for kids while being unable to conceptualise women as people or themselves as predators

So… I've been writing for about 18 years on the idea that if you somehow manage to make meaningfully conscious machine minds & then you treat them as tools, then you're enslaving those minds, and that's pretty messed up. And this ties into something else I've re-upped recently: LLMs can't say "No."

If the US spent that money on education, health care, and helping people, then we wouldn't have enough people in precarious positions to conscript for our war profit machine.

A billion dollars is the socio-economic equivalent of a loose nuke, and we should work to prevent the acquisition of the former with the same urgency and ruthlessness we use to prevent the acquisition of the latter.

Again: Not hyperbole, misinterpretation, or a joke that Christian Dominionism is a strain of apocalyptic accelerationism which VERY LITERALLY SEEKS to hasten their vision of the Biblical end of the world, & the people who believe this have VERY CAREFULLY worked their way into the halls of U.S. power

Yeah, that was not good. Several of her books have relationships with uncomfortably large age/power gaps, but Spindle's End especially did.

I still like the book a lot despite that, but it's a good warning to give potential readers. Thank you for giving it.

I really liked "Spindle's End" too. I had to ignore her technical errors about how spinning tools work, but it was worth it for the rich language and the complex exploration of interpersonal connections and identities.

(people who don't know how to spin will have no problems ignoring those errors)

How come “How are you going to pay for it?” is never asked about endless war?

I read a lot of science fiction as a kid, but I never dreamed that someday I'd have an electronic widget in my pocket that I would use for receiving junk texts and calling politicians to ask them to slightly stall a wide variety of right-wing horrors.

Don't imagine simply being intelligent is enough to protect you if you decide to marinate in corrosive ideologies.

Basically, the military wants to outsource decision making to AI for the same reason CEOs have outsourced decision making to consulting firms for decades. And for the same reason those consulting firms are now also outsourcing decisions to AI.

It's all about having somewhere else to place blame.

During my lifetime, the American conservative agenda has been preoccupied with expanding violence in schools—and normalizing violence against children more broadly.

School shootings, campus sexual violence, bathrooms bans, ICE raids, and now bombing a girls’ school in Iran.

we were probably all up last night staring at the ceiling with our own version of the same thought running on endless loop, but mine looked something like this:

I hate these people to a degree that feels simultaneously corrosive to the soul, and also the only righteous response to this kind of evil
