90 years ago today, Social Security became the law of the land.

9 decades later, and Republicans are cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, & handing seniors hard-earned money to Wall Street.

Our elders deserve to retire in dignity & receive their earnings in full.

this, like all eugenics, will both cause great harm, intensify all kinds of biases, and fail to produce more geniuses.

This (from last May) is a very good primer on crypto, stablecoins, and why letting them anywhere near the banking system is insane.

Question: does everyone know about banking runs: what they are, how they work, and why the FDIC both is a great solution to them AND requires serious regulation?

Press needs to stop repeating govt euphemism of β€œclearing homeless camps.” I’ve witnessed it in other cities: massive destruction of personal property. Not just bedrolls & tents; family photos, Bibles, meds. Times I’ve seen it people weren’t even given option to move their things.

27 years ago, two years after the introduction of effective HIV treatment, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s lesbian and gay community newspaper, ran β€˜No Obits’ as its headline.
It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.

there's a real conversation to be had about what does and does constitute safety but if you're using the moment of a Trumpist crackdown on a city denied congressional representation to say you're scared of certain neighborhoods then you're a dupe and a mark at best and a quiet fascist at worst.

Dolly Parton currently sends a new book to 2.2 million children every month. The number has steadily increased for years. It's in honor of her parents, who were illiterate. She works with hospitals. Many people have told us they had no idea the books would come. They are addressed to the child.

Yup. And racism. Racism is why we can't have these nice things.

We could offset housing prices with better public transportation too. People could live further away and have the same commute. But we can't have decent public transportation either, because racism.

I'll say it a thousand times -- any account of the past that only celebrates the good parts of a nation without reckoning with the bad is not what we call "history"

It is propaganda, pure and simple.

We need to break up media ownership so that it’s not all massive billionaires. We need to fix the court so they don’t block every reform. We need to fix voting rights once and for all.

Those are the three huge issues that we need to grapple with.

None of that happened under Biden.

As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed β€œdangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SFβ€”I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

As far back as 2003, when Nancy Pelosi became the D house leader, every republican in government and on TV went around sneering about her and her β€œSan Francisco values,” and it struck me that if Dems said anything comparable like β€œrural Texas values” they’d get crucified for it.

You kind of have to mention that these voters care about fake crimes that didn’t happen, and not about the real crimes that do happen.

For instance: they’re upset about entire cities being burned to the ground.

I would be upset about that, too, if it happened. But it didn’t.

I wrote another satire bc I'm the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor and I have strong feelings about camps:

An Automated Phone Tree for Your Brand New Alligator-Themed Detention Center (That Is Definitely Not A Concentration Camp)

Content Warning: totally a concentration camp

It works much better for us to contribute our expertise and time to improving and maintain the common good. That is part of what government is for. It sets up and maintains systems so we can have safe food, water, air, etc without pretending individual effort will get us there. 2/2

There are so many different things that could go wrong. Even if I could amass all the relevant skills (which would take more than a lifetime), there are not enough hours in the year for me to do all of my own safety inspections, planning, preparation, and infrastructure. 1/

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive GLOBAL study revealed COVID-19 vaccines utilizing mRNA technology PREVENTED OVER 2.5 MILLION deaths WORLDWIDE between 2020 and 2024.

It reveals that vaccinations didn’t JUST protect against illness.

They PRESERVED nearly 15 MILLION years of human life.

Ask A Mortician has a couple of videos about body composting and chemically dissolving bodies. Possibly a version of one of those methods could be sustainable in a small closed ecosystem like a space colony.
