20 minutes ago, very deep (600 km) Mw7.1 earthquake below Sabah, Malaysia.
Deep enough to be harmless, I suppose, but (due to the depth) were felt at great distances
This type of events are relatively common more to the east, at Celebes Sea, not here...

Signal on seismic station AU.FITZ from a Malaysian earthquake February 22, 2026.

Magnitude 7.1 #earthquake just over an hour ago off the coast of #Malaysia (2026-02-22Z16:57) The good news is that it is deep (over 600 km) which greatly reduces the harm it can cause.

Deadly M6 earthquake strikes northeastern Afghanistan Shallow thrust faulting in a highly vulnerable region

⚒️ 🧪

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan just before midnight on August 31st. Vulnerable homes built of mud, brick, stone, and wood collapsed; the reported death toll has exceeded 800 people.

Why do earthquakes occur here, what happened in this one, and why was it so deadly?
