Bevy 0.18.1 is out now!
This is a point release containing non-breaking fixes to bugs, documentation, and the occasional tiny utility function.
github.com/bevyengine/b...
To update from Bevy 0.18.0, just run "cargo update"
This brings back some *very* repressed memories, the nightmare of getting those old fglrx drivers running was what pushed me to switch to Nvidia for a decade (back on AMD GPU's again now tho, sick of the crap Nvidia driver and their inability to do Wayland properly)

Since Macy's post reached 690 likes to make her Lusty Argonian Maid video, here is my own fufilled promise- to sing Ragnar the Red on camera! I even forged some armor and weapons to complete the image π€

I haven't bought one yet (money *is* an object for me π) but if I could afford it I'd get a Sceptre brand one - so far, they're the only 4K TV's that have no smart "features".
Note: I'm a crazed Linux fanatic & have no qualms about making my own HTPC & zap-strapping it to the back of the TV π
I ruled out Stoat for my server an account of it being UK based, but Fluxer is on my shortlist so good to see some momentum behind it... setting up Matrix is more work than I have time to maintain, and XMPP doesn't really have much of a userbase
02.03.2026 16:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The big blocker for updating was actually all the crates I was using early on in the project... many were fine to begin with but stopped being maintained and things got messy. Slowly migrated off most, but at more than 50k lines it's now sufficiently complex that updating is a big task for #solodev

Alright, big accomplishment today: Heat Retreat has been updated from (very outdated) #bevy 0.13.2 to the...also outdated 0.14.2 release (latest is 0.18) π

Visuals are a little buggy (there were lots of changes to how colours work) but it's running so feeling pretty good about it

25.02.2026 02:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I don't know if "safer" is the best word choice there; more comfortable perhaps, but not safe. I've seen some pretty horrific things & it's a big reason why I'm now hell bent on staying as far away from C as possible. Pointers bridging kernel space->user space with direct memcpy off a tcp buffer...π€’

Gamepads are driving me absolutely insane; taking a "break" from a mini-game design to deal with input bugs from a few months ago.
The symptom: keyboard keys can can result in "flapping" inputs (eg, Esc -> pause menu flickering on/off). Cause: keyboard ID's itself as a gamepad, shenanigans ensue

just for reference, that's my Steam SDK adaptation to support building Rust/bevy. I have another container that automatically rebuilds the image & uploads it to quay.io but because of weirdness in the SDK the builder image needs to be run with very specific parameters
Nice, good to know! I was hesitant to invest time there since I've already containerized part of my build for Steam's Linux SDK (which doesn't play nice nested in other containers)
Plus setting up Xcode for my MacOS builds was the stuff of nightmares & not a pandoras box I wanted to open again π
Not to feed the temptation - but dual booting isn't just for Windows π

Laptops are always a pain π£
I like Fedora these days, it's kept very up to date, and boring. Which is good in an OS when you want to get shit done π
CachyOS is fun but YMMV; in my tests compiling my game Cachy was consistently slower in each kernel variant (10-20% slower, so not exactly trivial)
The problems crop up when you need system level dependencies that aren't available in, eg, a flatpak. I work in bevy so there are a few specific extra libs I need that got problematic
If Bazzite works for you then awesome! but if it doesn't there are plenty of great alternatives like vanilla Fedora
Loved the original growing up, couldn't even begin to count how many times I played through it π
Haven't tried any of the remakes, but hopefully those include buying more than 1 potion at a time - it was torture stocking up, something I'd (try to) relegate to younger siblings π
Yup, I have a 7000 series as well and encode AV1 no problem

Vancouver *is* a pretty terrible place to raise a family, leaving the city was the best decision I made, but not for the reasons these 1%ers are on about. Live in nannies are not a reality for most people; lack of childcare, overpriced shoebox sized apartments plus abysmal wages *are*
13.02.2026 16:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's also worth highlighting: these aren't a bunch of fancy laptops. One is an almost 10y old retired work laptop (no GPU), another is a newer (4y) work laptop also no dedicated GPU, and the third a hand me down gaming laptop of unknown age. No Windows, no need for brand new hardware
