AI stole basically everything I ever published along with pretty much every other writer so, no, I don’t think it’s cool or interesting or useful & now I don’t trust you because you think it’s “neat.”

It’s just theft.

I think it’s purely related to when I learned these things. I learned to translate as an undergrad and always did it longhand. Whereas I started writing regularly in grad school, when I almost always typed everything. It might be no more complicated than that!

With poems almost always typing drafts. With translation, almost always longhand!

James Longenbach (1959-2022) was the author of six books of poems—including Earthling, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award—and eight books of prose. He is survived by his wife, Joanna Scott, and their two daughters.

The lingering question of what to do with a journal that once took your work that’s now rejected you a dozen times in a row. Is it over? Was it me and not you? You and not me?

A quick positive note: I’ll be heading to Washington State for all of June to be in residency at the Willapa Bay AiR AND received a grant to work on a new book project at the Beinecke Library at Yale later in the summer.
