Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

The 15 or so largest metro areas account for something like 1/3 of the US population, so if the cost of housing in major metros is pricing people out of major job centers, it actually it is a pretty big, national problem.

버블리한 백인남자는 "I'd die for this man" 이런 말이 쓰임 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 누가 날 위해 죽어주겠냐고!!

A popular author is always worth studying, of course - I would never dispute that. So is a popular conservative ideologue. But why should anyone else be reading those particular books except as a specimen of post-WW2 British conservatism? That is what I fail to appreciate.

The series is probably quite valuable as a curiosity, to (for example) a scholar of popular conservatism. Other than that, however, wouldn't it be more fruitful to read, discuss, and promote those fantasy novels that are -not- written by a South African racist misogynist?

Tolkien’s Deplorable Cultus – Spectre Journal Robert T. Tally Jr. reads Tolkien's corpus with the tools of Marxist literary criticism, delivering a devastating blow to the fantasy writer's rightist fans.

My question - both to liberal defenders and left-leaning critical readers of JRRT and his series - is this: why is an unambiguous defence, or even a critical reading, of a deeply racist/sexist pop-literature series preferable to just finding another book to read?

All told, the picture is one of a consistent, if unacknowledged, libertarian eugenics.
The high-tech fertility market privileges those able to pay for genetic advantage.
The retreat of public health abandons the social minimum needed to ensure that all children can survive and thrive. And immigration policy redraws the body politic along racial lines, achieving by exclusion what mid-century welfare states once sought through inclusion.

What emerges is not a paradox but a 21st-century return of social Darwinism, wrapped in a language of choice, freedom and national greatness.

Yes, Trump dominates among the *white* working class (if defined as people without a college degree). But even here, religion played a key role: In 2024, about 86 percent of non-college white evangelicals voted for Trump – vs. only a minority of the non-evangelical white working class.

The tribune of the poor, the downtrodden? Studies clearly indicate that Trump’s most ardent supporters, especially in poorer areas, are, by local standards, quite wealthy / financially stable. Economic anxieties are mostly downstream from anxieties over racial and cultural status.

How is it that Harvard students and faculty aren’t in the quad protesting & demanding his firing / resignation? Undergraduates currently enrolled in his classes could & should massively disrupt campus on Monday.

More than firing a former President, how about Harvard starts requiring a much higher standard of conduct from its male academics and a zero tolerance policy for general grossness?

Not holding my breath of course, but we need elite institutions to set standards If we actually want to change culture

I’ll say it again: Why did @harvard.edu invite Larry Summers back into the classroom?
