Following a drier-than-normal winter, a pattern change at the beginning of March resulted in widespread heavy precipitation. This improved drought and dryness in parts of the Ohio Valley and Middle to Lower Mississippi Valley.

USDM Hot Topic March 12, 2026: the West. This week, abnormal dryness or drought increased from 73.14% to 76.51% of the West. Moderate drought or worse rose from 48.27% to 50.97%. Severe drought increased slightly from 17.46% to 17.95%. There was also an uptick in extreme drought, from 2.24% to 2.5%. Exceptional drought remained at 0.07%. Heading into spring, low snowpack and early snowmelt are concerns in the West. As of March 12, snow water equivalent is less than 40% of normal in some areas. (1/2)

USDM Hot Topic March 5, 2026: Florida is 100% in moderate drought or worse for the second week in a row. Severe drought or worse remained at 87.54%. Extreme drought rose from 67.39% to 70.51%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index, which is a number that represents the extent and severity of drought, increased from 355 to 358 of 500. Florida is completely covered in moderate to extreme drought. These conditions are hindering firefighting efforts in the Big Cypress National Preserve, where the National Fire has burned 35,000 acres as of March 5.

USDM Hot Topic February 26, 2026: Nebraska. Dryness or drought increased from 94.63% to 95.91% in Nebraska this week. Moderate drought or worse grew from 66.73% to 77.02%. Severe drought expanded from 21.41% to 26.37%. Extreme drought increased slightly from 4.61% to 4.79%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index rose from 187 to 204 of 500. While parts of Nebraska got snow last week, that moisture provided only temporary relief from overall dryness in the state. This has affected winter wheat, which was rated just 24% in good to excellent condition.
