As always, we are very open to feedback, ideas, random thoughts or excited GIFs; and we’re grateful to all the people we discussed this with!

One of our coolest results is that the effect of Wnt on abscission is cell state dependent (much like its effect on pluripotency, though that one depends on canonical signalling!) : it slows abscission in pluripotent cells, and accelerates it when cells have exited pluripotency.

What does Wnt do to delay abscission? Strikingly, canonical Wnt signalling seemed to do absolutely nothing. Instead, Wnt seems to act through non canonical pathways by keeping high levels of Aurora B at the bridge, and stabilizing the microtubules through GSK3b.

We show that Wnt signalling, which is active in pluripotent stem cell culture in vitro through inhibition of GSK3b, delays abscission. Importantly, we can recapitulate this effect at the single cell level using Opto-Wnt!

In previous work, we showed that in pluripotent stem cells, abscission is extremely delayed compared to formative cells, and that it is due to sustained activity of the abscission regulator Aurora B which stabilizes microtubule at the bridge. Here we asked why!

We are very proud to present our newest paper on the role of Wnt signalling in abscission dynamics in stem cells! A brief thread to entice you to read SnjeΕΎana’s exciting foray into signalling.

Anyone that has parented a toddler in the "not like thaaaaaaat" phase can understand the sheer terror I felt this morning when The Toddler asked me to "cut his egg".

The end of an era! Congrats on a great run as EiC!

She helped set up the lab and trained everyone that followed, and led 2 amazing projects (one published on microtubules and aurora b in stem cell division, one to come). She also provided many jokes about my use of social media, her love of bad croissants and the final of the 2018 world cup.

A picture of a book of Croatian recipes with a card that says "you're brie-liant" which is a terrible cheese pun

I've been in denial, but this is the last week of my first brie-liant PhD student SnjeΕΎana Kodba (defense some time in the spring/summer). We (I) were very lucky to have her and will miss her!!

A beautiful frozen lake covered in snow at sunset in lovely Utrecht

It has been a beautiful quiet week here in the Netherlands. I'm grateful and ache for everything that's going on in the world.

Seeing the "closed" sign in front of the coffee place I dragged my 3 yo to, in 20 cm of snow for 30 min, I pronounced the famous words of Napoleon during his Russia campaign: " well, fuck".

As the year draws to a close, the UU system is asking me to register my hours, so here is my recent template:
1h buying food
3h eating food
1h discussing other foods to eat
30 min exercising
3h with kids at ice rink/swimming pool/merry-go-round
1h laying down the law about one thing or other

A picture of the traditional Christmas log (it's a rolled cake with a chocolate butter cream. It looks like a piece of wood) from my grandmother, decorated by my kids. It has little macarons mushrooms, and all sorts of half hazardously placed Christmasy decorations, like a deer, a Santa Klaus on skis for some reason, candy canes, etc

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!

Yeah apparently it's the fog. Our Amsterdam Nantes today is now transformed into an Amsterdam Zurich Paris Nantes. It's ridiculous

Another KLM fiasco. Flight cancelled, got rebooked allegedly today, checked our luggage. It's in fact tomorrow. We must take 3 planes to do a trip that's usually 1h. We cannot get our luggage back because "it's in a secure area" so no option to take a train instead. Kids are crying. Happy holidays!
