looking at the GDC talks for this year and this kinda sums it up, huh

there are a lot of genres where you absolutely _cannot_ just hire some animator on contract and keep them isolated from the design team and "rhythm heavenlike" is maybe one of the tops on the list. Your animator(s) NEED to have an intimate understanding of the gameplay or it will feel: Very Bad

I think my top 10 advice are (no particular order):

1) Don't bring your A Game to a project unless you have a solid contract and/or you have a proven record that both parties can handle conflict in a mature way. Don't waste years of your life for the sake of people who obviously don't respect you.

(Bonus one: on larger teams, careful about what your client is telling/not telling the rest of the team, and the messy friction that this can cause without you quite understanding why. It doesn't even have to be mean-spirited or willful, but miscommunication can get REAL bad when freelancing.)

The way you allow yourself to be treated/paid is a standard you are unwittingly setting for others in your industry, especially those with less power than you.

Standing up for yourself *is* being a team player.

Sales tax (VAT etc) AND corporation tax AND income tax. Also don't forget refunds. Also don't forget 3rd party costs like contractors, marketing, localisation, software/tools, hardware, internet/webhosting, etc.

I have been replaying Iji (2008). when I first played this game back in 2009 it was the coolest thing ever. I remembered it having some very 2000s edge and went in expecting it to show its age. happy to report young me was right and this is the coolest game ever

SOME GENERAL TIPS FOR STEAM GAME DEMOS
(from someone who has played so many of them)

Note: These tips also apply to games in general! They're good tips!

On ne facture pas un dessin. On facture un dessin+du temps+l'amortissement du matos+la part des impôts.

Si tu factures un dessin à 15€ en te disant "c'est juste un dessin", tu vas pleurer quand il faudra racheter un stylo à 10 balles et un stock d'encre à 20 balles.

Boulet rappelle des bases toujours utiles. Le flou, le manque d'infos/expérience, la peur de passer pour qqn de chiant : tout ça c'est un environnement pour vous freiner dans la négociation. Donc de base négocier tout, tout le temps !
