A painted miniature of a D&D mind flayer (illithid). It is wearing a black robe with yellow trim and has a skull at its feet. Rather than his skin being painted in this traditional purple, it is painted a dark tan/khaki color.
I messed up, that was a modern mini, and yes, I think it was Reaper. The stamp on the base indicates it is a βRal Partha TSRβ mini from 1988 and I painted it around that time. Clearly not Citadel, but being TSR, it might be of interest or even possibly what you were referring to?

π€ How about this: paint the OSL in the highlight color.
Then for the desaturated style, a border of the mid tone color, then a glazed border of black outside that.
For the transitional color style, the OSL with the highlight color, then border of highlight or midtone transitional color, depending.

This is from a masterclass I took. The shadow line on the right hand is a darker version of the green. Itβs a little heavy handed but it seems to work. In hindsight, matching up where it get darker and stops could have been better lined up by his elbow, but live and learn.
Check out the fig with the apples shooting from the staff. He used yellow as a transition color instead of a shadow color. The painter told me his figure was meant to be in a brighter lightβ¦so he sought a transition color in common with what was getting hit by the light. So the green of the light is made essentially of yellow and blue. The skin is essentially orange, which is yellow and red. With yellow being the common color, it works as a transition color. Brilliant, right?
This video helped me a little. youtu.be/59XttPt0ldM?...
Also, someone told me that as the light hits something, it lengthens on the edges and shifts to a darker desaturated hue or needs a transition color. Here is are two references of that. Please see alt text for more. Hope this helps! βΊοΈ

π Yeah, I loved it actually. Once I saw how to build shadows around the light, it became easier. The colors didnβt look right and refining it took almost no time at all. I was a bit shocked, but my speed has been increasing a lot lately. 4 hours for this mini, in the past it was 20-30 hours!

I agree 100%. The handle itself is super comfortable. The bit that goes up is a fantastic hand rest and adds stability. It also acts as a great handle for when you need to turn the mini upside down, like when painting one eye or an underside. Couldnβt endorse this handle more. Totally worth it.

All colors are Golden SoFlat paints unless noted. The one with brown on the front has its shadow greens made of dark green and burnt umber. The one with red in the front has its shadow greens made of dark green and quinacridone red.

For the one on the left, the torch is painted nearly entirely with fluorescent yellow, fluorescent orange, and fluorescent red, with glazes of Kimera orange. The tips are painted with cadmium red dark and burnt umber.

Me too, it looks really slick! I was having trouble with NMM but it was execution. Then I added some retarder, made it super long for paint to dryβ¦wet blending turned out to be a great technique instead of glazing. Plus I hardly ever use wet blending, so it makes for good practice.

Pictured are two of four skeleton miniatures from the HeroQuest board game. Wveryhting is painted except for the scale mail in the crotch and the bases. Front view.
The leathers were painted with a layering of Golden SoFlat paints, burnt umber, burnt sienna, mars yellow deep, Naples yellow deep, and then a dot of titan buff here and there.
The first skeleton is painted with a sketch and blend technique, matching darker colors to the shadows and brighter ones to the highlights. The colors used were Golden SoFlat raw umber, Kimera oxide brown light, and SoFlat titan buff. They were mixed to create the blends. The kilt was painted with all SoFlats, crimson, layered with cadmium red dark, pyrrole red, and cadmium red light then glazed with Phthalo Green. The armor and scythe blade were painted mostly with Kimera white, iron hue, silver gray, and carbon black. A thin glaze of Golden SoFlat phthalo blue was applied on the armor and scythe blade.
The second skeleton was painted with SoFlat titan buff and then a wash of Vallejo sepia wash. Some highlights were painted over that. The kilt was painted with all SoFlats, phthalo blue (green shade), cobalt blue, cerulean blue hue, and medium phthalo blue, glazed with Kimera orange. The armor and scythe were painted the same as the skeleton above. The glaze over the armor was Golden high flow acrylic transparent red iron oxide to get an orange-y rust color. The scythe was glazed with blue like the skeleton above.
