Perspective:
Open-ended responses can improve ESM data by grounding it in real-world experiences and phenomena as they are experienced in everyday life. Handbooks and guidelines on ESM should include sections on collecting and analyzing open-ended text items.

What a week! After 5 days, the #mitnb workshop has come to an end. We had a keynote on time scales and two workshops on careless responding and reliability. The central part of the workshops were the hackathons. We had super diverse hackathons, all designed to assess measurement in #ESM. (1/4)

1st day of #MITNB meeting at @tesc-tilburgu.bsky.social. Excited for the week ahead, where we'll tackle measurement issues in #ESM, e.g. modeling processes across timescales, building a formal theory on measurement, and evaluating statistical assumptions in #ESM data.

We built the openESM database:
▶️60 openly available experience sampling datasets (16K+ participants, 740K+ obs.) in one place
▶️Harmonized (meta-)data, fully open-source software
▶️Filter & search all data, simply download via R/Python

Four large Dutch universities, including Leiden University where I work, have decided to throw international psychology bachelor programs under the bus in an effort to appease the rightwing government.

Next to that we provide introductory boxes for each qualitative method that also review its use in the clinical ESM field.

We describe examples from the literature and our own (still to be published) work how to concretely use qualitative methods to check for 3 validity issues related to *subjective* interpretations of participants: The interpretation of concepts, scales and the study as a whole.

It was such a pleasure to work on this project during my final months in the PNN board.

For this report I led 13 focus group discussions with a total of 46 PhD candidates from all across the Netherlands.

Hopefully our results and recommendations help improve future PhD trajectories.
