It's very technically feasible to build Reddit, the trick is how to get anyone to use it, or even enough people to use it that you can stop using the other sites. still waiting to see if I'll be forced to use Stoat or Fluxer next, y'know?
you could probably do either thing with enough javascript. lots of things leverage the opengraph meta tags to produce a thumbnail, I bet some of those work on the client side
