As others stated was a test at 11 to determine go to more academic grammar school or not. Did allow some social mobility based on intelligence.
Replaced by comprehensive systems where school determined by where you live, so catchment area to best schools are more expensive to buy house in.

As most peoples rent in Merthyr is paid by the state it would be difficult to get rented accommodation if you have a job in UK, as that is a less secure income.
Reading some court cases, German police have it easy catching criminals, they all have surnames that are just one character.
