The ocean is an acoustic world and sound means survival for marine wildlife. In #IMarEST Marine Professional, Carlos Bravo Villa makes the case for a future, where shipping is carbon-free & quiet, and welcomes the High Ambition Coalition for a Quiet Ocean. 🌊

2/2 40 countries + scientists, Indigenous Peoples & civil society already stand against #DeepSeaMining. And with the #BBNJ Agreement now in force, Deep-Sea Mining is incompatible with its biodiversity & conservation objectives. A moratorium could help to safeguard the High Seas.

The deep sea covers ⅔ of our planet, regulates climate, stores carbon & supports biodiversity. As the #ISA Council meets (9–19 March), the choice is clear: adopt a precautionary pause or a moratorium on #deepseamining. 🌊 Mining risks irreversible & permanent damage. 1/2

4/5 In 2023, the @imohq.bsky.social designated the NW Mediterranean as a 'Particularly Sensitive Sea Area', addressing deadly ship strikes on whales & recommending speeds of 10-13 knots. OceanCare's research shows shipping companies are not complying. Voluntary measures are not effectively working.

2/5 🚨 All face severe threats by human activities or consequences. This is reality for many species in Spanish waters. Fin and sperm whales face critical threats in both, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.

👉 4 decades after the IWC’s moratorium on commercial whaling entered into force, many, including blue, fin, and sperm whales, remain threatened or endangered. The same is true for their smaller “cousins” liked beaked whales, dolphins, which were never officially protected by the moratorium. 1/5

🐋 Over the last days, a #beluga whale has been seen off the coast of the #Netherlands, raising concerns about its survival & attracting some unwanted attention. Boats & drones are causing visible stress to the animal. These disturbances drain precious energy the whale needs to find its way home. 1/2

👉 Unilateral deep-sea mining attempts undermine international law & global ocean governance. Deep-sea mining will cause irreversible damage to deep-sea ecosystems. A global moratorium is urgently needed. ⚠️ With the BBNJ in force, it is important to take its embedded protection commitments seriously.

4/4 The questions directly challenge the Spanish Government: Will Spain's #MITECO comply with ACCOBAMS Resolutions 8.12 and 9.6A? And will upgrade the conservation status of both species to "endangered"? Will it approve legally required Recovery Plans?

3/4 The Mediterranean populations of both species are ENDANGERED on #IUCN Red List (since 2012 & 2021). But Spain's #MITECO: Still classifies them as "vulnerable" (unchanged since 2011). No action despite solid scientific evidence. 📊

5/5 Resolution 9.6A now requires Spain to review and upgrade the species’ status within a reasonable timeframe — or justify why not. Spain is a strong advocate champion for multilateral institutions and must comply with #ACCOBAMS resolutions.
