2/2 38 countries are now committed to science-based solutions that restore a quieter ocean. OceanCare,
@ifawglobal.bsky.social, @nrdc.org, @eia-news.bsky.social and Humane World for Animals, will continue to support the HAC & its work to advocate for ambitious action to adress #noisepollution.
The ocean is an acoustic world and sound means survival for marine wildlife. In #IMarEST Marine Professional, Carlos Bravo Villa makes the case for a future, where shipping is carbon-free & quiet, and welcomes the High Ambition Coalition for a Quiet Ocean. 🌊

2/2 40 countries + scientists, Indigenous Peoples & civil society already stand against #DeepSeaMining. And with the #BBNJ Agreement now in force, Deep-Sea Mining is incompatible with its biodiversity & conservation objectives. A moratorium could help to safeguard the High Seas.
#HighSeasTreaty
The deep sea covers ⅔ of our planet, regulates climate, stores carbon & supports biodiversity. As the #ISA Council meets (9–19 March), the choice is clear: adopt a precautionary pause or a moratorium on #deepseamining. 🌊 Mining risks irreversible & permanent damage. 1/2

2/2 Researchers from the University of Padova and the Natural History Museum of Venice published a new paper in Frontiers in Ethology describing the risks the solitary dolphin faces and calling for responsible coexistence. Read the full paper here 👉 www.frontiersin.org/journals/eth...
Venice has a very special visitor: "Mimmo", a bottlenose dolphin that has called the Venetian Lagoon home for eight months. Now scientists are calling for its protection and for people to behave appropriately around the dolphin. 🐬 1/2
4/5 In 2023, the @imohq.bsky.social designated the NW Mediterranean as a 'Particularly Sensitive Sea Area', addressing deadly ship strikes on whales & recommending speeds of 10-13 knots. OceanCare's research shows shipping companies are not complying. Voluntary measures are not effectively working.
3/5: OceanCare, Ecologistas En Accion, in the name of a NGO coalition, call on the Spanish Government: ➡️ Introduce mandatory speed limits in the Cetacean Migration Corridor ➡️ Reclassify fin & sperm whales as "endangered" ➡️ Deliver a management plan that provides effective protection
@miteco.gob.es
2/5 🚨 All face severe threats by human activities or consequences. This is reality for many species in Spanish waters. Fin and sperm whales face critical threats in both, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.
👉 4 decades after the IWC’s moratorium on commercial whaling entered into force, many, including blue, fin, and sperm whales, remain threatened or endangered. The same is true for their smaller “cousins” liked beaked whales, dolphins, which were never officially protected by the moratorium. 1/5
The 3rd part of the 5th round of the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations #INC53 resumes in Geneva, Switzerland for the election of a new Chair ✍️ We hope for leadership that's fair, transparent & committed to public interest. Swipe to learn about our expectations for the new chair.
2/2 #Climatechange is increasingly forcing Arctic and Subarctic marine animals to search for new habitat and prey – often in unfamiliar waters. Read more about the sighting:

🐋 Over the last days, a #beluga whale has been seen off the coast of the #Netherlands, raising concerns about its survival & attracting some unwanted attention. Boats & drones are causing visible stress to the animal. These disturbances drain precious energy the whale needs to find its way home. 1/2
We’re thrilled to share that Türkiye🇹🇷 has ratified the #HighSeasTreaty.
Every new ratification brings us closer to truly universal participation in this landmark Agreement.

👉 Unilateral deep-sea mining attempts undermine international law & global ocean governance. Deep-sea mining will cause irreversible damage to deep-sea ecosystems. A global moratorium is urgently needed. ⚠️ With the BBNJ in force, it is important to take its embedded protection commitments seriously.
4/4 The questions directly challenge the Spanish Government: Will Spain's #MITECO comply with ACCOBAMS Resolutions 8.12 and 9.6A? And will upgrade the conservation status of both species to "endangered"? Will it approve legally required Recovery Plans?
👉More: www.lavanguardia.com/natural/2026...
3/4 The Mediterranean populations of both species are ENDANGERED on #IUCN Red List (since 2012 & 2021). But Spain's #MITECO: Still classifies them as "vulnerable" (unchanged since 2011). No action despite solid scientific evidence. 📊
2/4 #Mediterranean fin whales & sperm whales are disappearing. #Shipstrikes are the leading cause of death. These species can't reproduce fast enough to survive – collisions could determine their extinction.
Spain's whale protection inaction has reached Parliament. 🐋 Following OceanCare's #ACCOBAMS complaint, the #SUMAR parliamentary group – Spain's coalition partner – is now demanding answers. 1/4
Today, the world has made history - the #BBNJ Agreement has officially entered into force.
Hear from ministers, ocean advocates, and High Seas Alliance members urging all nations to keep global momentum toward universal ratification high.

⏳ Years of negotiation, advocacy & collaboration have led to this historic moment!
The #HighSeasTreaty is now in force, a testament to the leadership of governments, civil society, Indigenous leaders, scientists & many more ocean champions everywhere.

🌊 A historic day for the #ocean! The #HighSeasTreaty has officially entered into force, a win for multilateralism and for our blue planet. Next step: universal membership! 📣 We call on remaining governments to join the Agreement now! #OceanCare #BBNJ

5/5 Resolution 9.6A now requires Spain to review and upgrade the species’ status within a reasonable timeframe — or justify why not. Spain is a strong advocate champion for multilateral institutions and must comply with #ACCOBAMS resolutions.
#whaleprotection #marineconservation
4/5 That’s why #OceanCare filed a formal complaint against Spain within the #ACCOBAMS Follow-Up Committee. After considering the arguments of both sides, the conclusion on OceanCare's complaint was adopted as Resolution 9.6A by the 9th Meeting of the Parties held last November in Cyprus.
3/5 In 2022, the Resolution of #ACCOBAMS required all signatories to align its national classification with IUCN assessments. But Spain didn’t follow.
2/5 Mediterranean sperm whales have been listed as “endangered” on the #IUCN Red List since 2012 and Mediterranean fin whales since 2021. But Spain still classifies them as only "vulnerable" – unchanged since 2011.
1/5 Major progress for whale protection! 🐋
#Spain must reclassify Mediterranean sperm and fin whales as endangered. Here’s why this matters — and what needs to happen next.
