In the case of agents that are alive, we expect to see at least two (broad categories) of affective state: default mode, and distress.
In RL terms, an emotion is a particular flavor of latent variable that the agent's policy is conditional upon. Not all agents need to be parameterized wrt an emotion variable, but if the agent is subject to affective states, their behavioral policy will always be conditional upon it.
