For the annoying discover tab people that are unfamiliar with the way basil is: this is his favorite situation to be in and he regularly requests it, he could easily escape if he wanted to as I am holding him with practically no force

Basil the cat on my desk with his head in my right hand, eyes closed, looking very peaceful

If I grab his head like this he becomes completely motionless and starts purring

Agreed on the too long and meandering. My experience with the Graeber books I've read is that he makes a compelling point, but then it doesn't really go anywhere; he just restates the main argument over and over and over, sometimes with a crumb of extra nuance/detail here and there

Loving county (least populous county in the country) early election results with 2.7% of the vote in (1 vote), going 100% for Cornyn

I've seen enough. Calling it for Cornyn

Something I like about Le Guin's writing is that she's able to mention skin color without making the description weird. It's nice to see an author just say brown instead of comparing every non-white person to coffee or chocolate

The most predictable thing ever.

"The US military recruits from the sociopathic progeny of middle-class families who fully buy into US exceptionalism and Christian fundamentalism" is a less sympathetic narrative though isn't it, you fucking bootlickers.

Out of curiosity, has the NYT ever published even a single opinion piece written by a socialist?

Teen girl in hospital bed reading from her little clam shell

Is there a technology the left is excited about?" It's called the clamshell e-reader from It Follows, and I've been waiting for it since 2014

He tried to read an elementary economics text; it bored him past endurance, it was like listening to somebody interminably recounting a long and stupid dream.

Why would Elon Musk pivot from Mars to the Moon all of a sudden? SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon."

Watching Eric Berger (historically a Musk fanboy) struggle with the revelation that Musk is a fake engineer conman white supremacist never loses its entertainment value

If a deeply unpopular woman with uninspiring policies managed to win the popular vote less than a decade ago, I don't see why we should be all defeatist about someone with much higher favorability, more charisma, and a much more sellable political vision

Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

Hydrogen is a nightmare material to handle and store. Leaks super easy, damages a lot of materials, is extremely flammable, has super low density, and has to be stored at either high pressure or near absolute zero. Plus generating it is super inefficient. Almost any other alternative is preferable.
