The popularity of “new antiquarianism” challenges how we understand research impact - LSE Impact Research in the humanities is not confined to academic institutions. Particularly in history & archaeology where "new antiquarianism" creates public research.

Fantastic article on “New Antiquarianism” - a world I’ve plunged my toes into this last two years! 💫

I personally think it’s a fantastic thing!

I was at Moulton just last week. Impressive one.

Something like that I think. And rivers / topo.

Don’t forget Kirk Hammerton - if you believe in that one!

There are many more beyond even them. There’s actually a potential one to the immediate west of the Thornborough three.

I’m not saying they were cosmically aligned. But it’s a hell of a coincidence.

Well, they do, actually.

Go on Google Maps, use the measuring tool. Draw a line though the northern henges entrance, through the southern henge - then all the way to the Devil’s Arrows (arbitrary I know).

This passes directly through Nunwick Henge’s causeways.

Not to mention, by the way, that the line on the map I drew even shows what you're describing?

If you think it's a coincidence that Cana Barn, Hutton Moor, the Thornborough Henges, and Nunwick are all placed on that alignment by chance... well, I don't know. But I'd say it's pretty obvious.

That map is 100% accurate. The line passes through all those henges, in that exact alignment, all the way to the Devil's Arrows. It's not exact, obviously.

They're aligned to the lay of the land, but people were clearly doing these things southeast / northwest down the Vale.

Boroughbridge up to Nosterfield for the main part of it yes. It’s where the River Ure meets the Swale.

I know that map can look cooky. But in this case, you can literally draw a line through their causeways, directly through one another to the Devil's Arrows.

A blatant long-distance alignment of ceremonial enclosures.

There's also a potential suerhenge just north of the Devil's Arrows. 🏺

The Vale of Mowbray is the most insane prehistoric site in the British Isles. In my opinion 🤔

An 11-mile chain of at least eight southeast / northwest aligned henges (among the largest in Britain), terminating at Britain's 2nd tallest standing stones... 😩

I'm aware that there was disagreement about the article by Steve Dickinson on a potential new Cumbrian Stone Circle (@adamibbotson.bsky.social). I wonder whether this is the reason that the Autumn Issue of PAST 111 has been deleted online. I am sad because we had an article on malt in this issue. 🤔

The Autumn Issue, Number 111 of PAST, the magazine of @prehistoricsociety.bsky.social, has been taken offline. It was there, we know this because we downloaded a copy. But now it is gone. Can anyone please explain why this has happened. Thanks.

Oops - just saw you were one of those authors! If they did take it down because of the Dickinson article, I really hope they republish your work again elsewhere.

It’s a real baby and bathwater situation, as I and many others found the other articles very interesting.

If so, good. Far too big a claim to be throwing around willy nilly.

But the rest of the work in there was great. Hope that’s not been lost.

I was playing with 3D analysis techniques, and found something cool. 🌟

Who wants digital crop marks? Well, this method gives you an idea of how crop marks will appear in the landscape for any subtly surviving earthworks, using only GIS and 3DsMax.. 😎

Some people just like the acclaim. And the news will take literally anything you give them.

Archaeology is an easy pull.

Nobody in the know believes it. The LDNP archaeo visited the site with him and told him it’s very unlikely.

Yet, he’s on the news stating that it’s 100% real.

I was the one who found the LiDAR feature. So, if anything, it’s my discovery haha

Pure speculation to be honest! But, carvings like this are found in Neolithic contexts - stone circles, tombs eyc.

I should really have said Neolithic/Bronze Age.

The so-called “Snake Stone”. A large fallen boulder below The Wainstones, a rocky outcrop in the North York Moors. 🤔

It has a single large piece of Neolithic rock art on it: a long line terminating in a dot. (zoom in to find it!)

Moral of the story - if you say "possibly", "maybe", and "potentially", everythig might just be fine. Though, it'd take a lot of convincing.

Not doing so, in circumstances like this, is simply spreading misinformation.
