If one looks at the facts surrounding the creation, use, and effects of generative AI, it quickly becomes clear that there are some serious considerations involved. These areas in need of more careful reflection include: Hyperlinked list of issues: Legal issues Moral issues Ethical issues Environmental issues Psychological issues Privacy & security issues Economic issues Philosophical issues Education issues Racism & bias issues Text under list: This is by no means a comprehensive list; but the extent of this list goes to show that there are considerable problems with generative AI that have not been fully or clearly addressed. Before AI is adopted into use at an educational institution, it would seem like educational malpractice to avoid reaching conclusions about where the institution stands on these issues.

As part of a discussion about AI in middle school, I put together this slide deck with reasons why we owe it to our students to be very critical, and links to recent supporting articles & info.

I have watched incredible, kind, talented people, friends, mentors, be absolutely brutalised, silenced and pushed out to sea - and none of the people they spent their careers supporting lift a finger to defend them. I can’t unknow it. I can’t unsee it. Justice is thin on the ground here.

I do a lot of asking for love and light over here, I know I do, and I do it with intention - but it’s also completely reasonable to have days right now where your heart is heavy, too.
The cruelty and the cowardice of the last couple of years really weighs on me. I wish it hadn’t changed me so much.

It’s impossible to avoid the conclusion that large parts of Westminster remaining on X - a platform that tolerates and amplifies extremism and racism - has led a great many people to normalise what previously was unacceptable.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.
