To go back one more election, Hillary Clinton's margin in 2016 was bigger than Trump's margin in 2024.

These people have civilian jobs. It's one thing to mobilize them for an emergency or a legitimate war, another thing to send them to American cities to stand around and mill about. You're messing with people's careers to further a hostile and idiotic agenda.

So much talk about "working-class" voters becomes a discussion of how to accommodate and reinforce misogyny and bigotry in order to win elections. "Working-class" in these discussions invariably means men (usually white men). If those are the voters you're trying to reach, just be honest about it.

But once the 2021 state law that restricted teaching about race and gender passed, some teachers avoided the topic. The law prohibits teachers from singling out specific racial groups as responsible for past racism. It specifies that individuals of a certain race shouldn’t be portrayed as inherently racist, “whether consciously or unconsciously.” In addition to teachers’ licensure being on the line, repeated failure to comply would allow the state to revoke district accreditation, which could result in a state takeover. When educators questioned how to teach about a race massacre without running afoul of the law, state legislators and the Tulsa County chapter of the conservative parent group Moms for Liberty weighed in to say that white people today shouldn’t feel shame and that the massacre’s perpetrators shouldn’t be cast as racists. A Moms for Liberty chapter representative did not respond to questions from ProPublica.

Changes to Oklahoma’s curriculum rules make it so teachers aren’t supposed to tell students that the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 — a defining incident of racial violence in Oklahoma history — was perpetrated by racists.

Attorney General James Launches Portal to Collect Photos and Videos of ICE Activity in New York NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James is encouraging New Yorkers to submit videos or other documentation of federal immigration enforcement actions in New York following yesterday’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on Canal Street in New York City. “Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation,” said Attorney General James. “If you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and assessing any violations of law. No one should be subject to unlawful questioning, detention, or intimidation.” Attorney General James is asking New Yorkers to share photos or videos of federal government actions using the Office of the Attorney General’s new online portal.

NEW: After The Washington Post reported Monday on the demolition of the "East Wing facade," a new picture obtained by Law Dork that was taken on Tuesday shows that a substantial portion of the entirety of the East Wing has been demolished.

Also, I'm far from an expert in male voters. But are we arguing that all men have publicly posted and/or believe problematic things? And that we're doing bad politics by not just ignoring those views?

We should have a place in politics for folks who don't agree with us. And yes, we should be looking to grow our coalition and win votes from people who have held some views that don't always fit with our values.

But there's a big difference between "a place in politics" and a Senate seat.

Primaries Can Help Us Win Attacking other voters or ignoring our values doesn’t.

It's critical that we win seats in the midterms. That means running the best candidates, which means competitive primaries. That's not a bad thing, unless we use the primaries to dismiss or exclude other voters or abandon our values. More in my latest substack:
