Astrid sweats while climbing the shelves and says "let's get this over with quickly" to herself. She's so focused on her task she doesn't hear a creaking noise behind her. We see a pair of feet in black dress shoes by the end of the library, their owner making a somewhat confused noise while looking at the library.
Astrid thinks to herself: "Hopefully I can get the book I need. I need a breakthrough real bad", and is, again, so absorbed in climbing and her own thoughts she doesn't hear the shuffling noise behind her, or a voice asking "Hello...?"

Devil in the Details:

A story about a girl giving her all to find magic in a world where almost everyone can use it except her.

Astrid warms up through stretching her arms and says "too bad" while looking a bit smug. "I'm doing this the old-fashioned way", she carries on as she looks up at the tall bookshelves.
She starts climbing the shelves, thinking "the goal is the books on the top shelf".

Astrid thinks: "Looks like the coast is clear", and starts removing her backpack, and then sweater. The sweater falls to the floor next to the backpack as Astrid starts to also remove her shoes.
Finally, we see her put up her hair from the back, wearing a black sports bra, with the scare on her shoulder clearly visible.
"I know I was only let in here because the Professor doesn't think I can reach the rare books", she thinks.

Professor Alma uses her magic to open the giant wooden doors. Her and Astrid peek into the opening.
"There, it's open", Alma says. "I'll come get you in half an hour."
Astrid silently takes in the library in front of her. There's an ornate window on the wall at the other side of the room, with two equally ornate wall hangings of stylised plants on either side. There's a reading table in the corner, and the bookshelves of the library are too tall to see the end of. The door closes behind Astrid. She takes in the details around her; A closer look at the reading table and the old books, and the almost scary height of the bookcases. Further up there are some glowing orbs lighting the bookshelves.
She then looks around. The library is silent.

Professor Alma suddenly excitedly makes a gesture as if she had just remembered something important. "Oh, on another note", she says, "did you notice anyone special attending your lecture today?" Astrid looks confused, tilts her head awkwardly and replies: "... No?"
Alma looks back at Astrid over her shoulder, looking surprised. "No...?" she asks, and then holds her chin in contemplation, letting out a small "hmm".
The both get close to a huge set of ornately carved wooden doors and Alma shrugs. "Oh well, you'll find out!" she laughs.

The fluffy haired many in the black polo smiles and leans his shin on his right hand, his hair eyes obscured. "Hmm." He says. An ornate clock shows the time is 1.15pm as students file out of the classroom underneath it. It's really crowded and noisy. One of the students shout "See you later, teach!", and Astrid smiles and waves in exhaustion. "Uh-huh, see you", she replies.
She looks quite haggard and complains "I need a month off..."
Professor Alma laughs and claps her hands. "Haha, you did great in there." She then leans over with a gentle look to look up at Astrid's face and says: "Give it four years and you'll be an amazing teacher."
Astrid stops, the air around her going gloomy. "Oh." Astrid and the professor walk through a corridor lined with arched windows that give us a glimpse of the campus, a few students also passing through. 'I'm sorry professor, I can't live up to your expectations', Astrid thinks. She says: "I'm a comic artist, not a teacher. That aside, about our deal..."
Professor Alma pauses, her back looking tense. She hesitantly glances over her shoulder at Astrid who's been trailing behind her. "Astrid, are you sure this is what you want?" she asks, and then reaches out to hold Astrid's hands gently in concern. "It's just, you've been stretching yourself so thin...", she says. Professor Alma looks up at Astrid's face with sincerity and concern, holding heer hand tight. "I just worry you'd be happier if you did not do this -"
But Astrid doesn't look too pleased and interrupts the professor: "Are you going back on your promise?" she asks.
The professor pauses and looks down. "... No, I just..."
Astrid stares at Professor Alma with an intense gaze, and the professor lets out a surprised "Eep!"
"Acces to the restricted library, right?" she asks.
"And a copy of a book of my choice", Astrid replies, crossing her arms.
"Ugh...! Yes... Of course..." The professor concedes.

One of the students, a person with small demon horns sitting on top of their head, start saying "But how could a non magi-" and their seat neighbour, a girl wearing a witch hat, slaps her hand over their mouth. They both look at Astrid, the girl with the witch hat embarrassed, and the demon person somewhat annoyed.
Astrid sits down on a table in the classroom. "Right, then let me ask you", she says, "do you know the main two types of magic?"
The demon person looks offended. "That's a given", they say.
Astrid smirks slightly. "And they differ how?" She asks.
The final panel of the comic page is an image of a potion, wand and book floating in the air among soft sparkles. "Ugh... Well, Tamed Magic is any magic you can reliably repeat", the demon person says. The demon student appears to be counting on their fingers. "And Wild Magic is any magic yet to be Tamed", they say. "It's volatile, unpredictable and often dangerous... Why though...? This is such basic stuff." In the background of the panel, behind them ,there's a person screaming as they're engulfed in flames and magic crystals float around them.
Astrid smiles, satisfied, and responds: "Hmm, well. You're exactly right. Then, let's put it this way."
In the final panel the background behind Astrid depicts an old-school-looking map depicting the unknown as land covered in forest, and the known as a land of rivers, mountains and occasional forests.
She asks: "Have you, a person born with magic, ever had to explore Wild Magic? Despite our current knowledge, it's an impossibly large and scary field of study. So why would you if you don't have to?" Astrid looks up with a somewhat sinister expression. "I research it more than most because I'm DESPERATE. Of course I'd pick up a thing or two." The students murmur as she keeps explaining, "One can still learn theory even without magic."
The demon student apologises awkwardly: "I... I see. Sorry..." The student with the witch hat gives them the side-eye, annoyed, and whispers "stop being a dick."
Astrid sighs with a smile, and then starts fiddling with her papers, moving on with her lecture: "Alright, any other questions before we sta-"
"TEACH ARE YOU SINGLE???" she's interrupted. Professor Alma chockes and spits with laughter in the foreground. Astrid looks out over the crowd of students. "No comment", she says.
"THAT MEANS YOU ARE", someone yells.
"No", Astrid says. "I just didn't think you were ready to hear about me and your mother yet."
The crowd of students laugh and giggle, but in the back we see the back of a man with fluffy hair, wearing a white polo observing everything.
Astrid and the student who interrupted her banter.
"Hey, leave my mum alone!!"
"I'll consider it if you pay attention in class!"

"Aren't we forgetting something, Miss famous comic author", the professor asks and Astrid anxiously crumples up the paper she's holding. A student attending the lecture slams their hands on the desk in front of them and says "NO WAY", startling Astrid, who lets out a small "eep".
The professor snickers in the background and, Astrid's introduction to the reader continues with a "That's what I do. Comics." The student who slammed their hands on the desk boisterously exclaims "You're Astrid Asklund?! I'm your biggest fan!"
Astrid laughs sheepishly. "Ahaha, I guess you know about me then. Then you may be wondering what a non-magic person is doing here?"
"Yeah, I kinda was actually", a student next to the one that said they were Astrid's fan says. The student that's a fan goes on an incomprehensible rant about Astrid's achievements and the student next to them stares blankly at nothing in particular and says "huh, neat." The students murmur.
"Am I supposed to know who she is?"
"Beats me."
"An NM...?"
"Will she even be able to teach?"
The student who's a fan turns back to face all of them and yells "Y'ALL SUCK".
Astrid watches the whole thing with an unreadable expression, but her hand clutches her notes tightly. She then exhales and addresses the students.
"Alright, settle down, she says. "It's not strange if you don't know me" A student whispers "look, she agrees", but gets interrupted by Astrid smiling to hide her anger and crumpling up her notes. "It's not every day you see people like me in academia", she says. "Since I'm just an NM."
"Uh-oh", professor Alma says, and the students look startled.
The professor goes up to Astrid to calm her down. "Now, now", she says, and then whispers: "Let's not bring the mood down." She then smiles brightly and asks: "Shall we begin the lecture?" "As our little friend here mentioned, Astrid is quite the expert", Alma says.
Astrid inhales with frustrated look on her face. "Breathe, this is nothing new", she thinks.
She then goes up to pat the professor's shoulder. "I'm alright", she says. The professor, slightly startled, says: "Huh? Okay..."
Astrid crosses her arms, now looking calm. "The reason I'm here in this magic theory classroom", she says, "is because I have the skills to invent a fully functional magic system."

It's still a bit odd looking at these old pages again, as they were drawn years ago, but again I'm not planning on redrawing them unless something drastic happens because I'd rather carry the story forward instead πŸ˜‚ Time is precious.

We see a school building, and then inside a classroom. Students are waiting for their lecture to start, and the girl is sitting on a chair beside an elderly witch in front of the class, looking nervous.
"I'm Astrid Asklund", she introduces herself to you, the reader. "A person who can't use magic, and yet..."
The elderly witch leans down to touch Astrid's shoulder and asks her: "Are you nervous...?" Astrid looks up at the many students before her. "Somehow I'm about to teach these kids magic theory", she finishes her introduction to you.
"I'm fine", she says. "You remember our deal, right?"
The elderly witch looks uncomfortable and replies: "Yes, of course... It's not like you'd let me forget."
She then abruptly changes the topic, claps her hands and exclaims: "Oh dear me, look at the time!" "Pay attention, class!" she says as she uses her wand to magic a rain of sparkles into existence. The students laugh. "Professor Alma is so extra", one of them says. Meanwhile, Astrid is looking a bit uncomfortable, thinking "she always does this", but she is mesmerised by the display of magic.
'You see, I have something I want', she thinks, as the chatter and noises of the class fades into indistinguishable sounds. She stares longingly at the sparks, unaware that her name is being called. 'I want it more than anything', she thinks. And suddenly she is brought out of her thoughts by the professor urgently whispering her name.
"Please introduce yourself", the professor says.
"Oh, right! I'm Astrid, a magic researcher." Astrid smiles awkwardly and stands in front of the classroom blackboard.
'I'm not lying when I say I'm a magic researched', she carries on with her non-verbal introduction to you, the reader. 'But the truth is'
