Happy new year! All of the poetry from the sagas of Icelanders are now publicly accessible! This includes the poetry of Egill, Kormákr, and other gems like Darraðarljóð.

If you feel you don't know enought about Richard Cleasby who was the guiding spirit behind the first Old Norse-English dictionary, my new biographical article has just been published in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography -- along with other lexicographers

And when you do actually make it to the shops on Saturday, you still end up queuing behind a bunch of pensioners who could have done their shopping during the week.

I've always wondered what the people of Bern think of the eponymous cheese-filled sausages they eat in Austria (for that matter Frankfurt or Vienna - are sausages always named after places they're clearly not from?)

Such a great poem! The loneliness of an earthquake- and eruption-causing giant in early Iceland.
(Skaldic Project's stanza of the day is random btw)

@hornesupremacy.bsky.social what about @onp.ku.dk and @skaldic.org for your list/starter pack? (Great initiative!)

Brúðkaupsvísur was overlooked by Finnur Jónsson's Skjaldedigtning, but Valgerður Erna Þorvaldsdóttir identified it in Íslensk miðaldakvæði as proper to SkP's corpus (it's pre-1400) and edited it for SkP. The poem describes a Marian miracle and is in hálfhneppt (‘half-curtailed’) metre.

I love the way @judithjesch.bsky.social engages with @onp.ku.dk's and @skaldic.org's daily posts!

These dictionaries are all available at their rightful locations, e.g. www.edd.uio.no/perl/search/... (Fritzner) - and via @onp.ku.dk, with permission and with attribution.

stscoundrel - Overview Software Developer. stscoundrel has 175 repositories available. Follow their code on GitHub.

It's pretty outrageous that some guy (github.com/stscoundrel) has republished various digitised dictionaries, the result of painstaking work by many other people over many years, without any attempt at crediting the source of the data, and even claiming copyright for himself on the web pages.

The Skaldic Project as of vol. V (2022) has published 87% of the stanzas in the corpus. Currently 97% of stanzas have been entered into our database, having been through (at least) the first stages of review, with only 162 stanzas to go.

The Skaldic Project has been working on the last two volumes since vol. V came out. We are currently going through 'Batch 15' of the Icelandic History volume, which is slowly coming towards completion. Work on the Runic volume is going on in parallel.

I've set up a feed for the Skaldic Project - with the stanza of the day (including translation) plus some news about the project when it comes up. Follow if interested in Old Norse poetry!

But a good way to research a topic in this way is to use the definition search in @onpdict.bsky.social and type in 'penis' - lots of matches there to delve into!

'man eater' would capture the innuendo better than 'cannibal'?
