Unfortunately, you’re right. Someone I knew from high school sent me a DM me on instagram earlier today asking me why my stories have been so angry and to explain to her what ICE is and what’s going on. I was the first person to tell her about Alex Pretti or Renée Good. She had no idea.

Again - their tweet is a simple statement of facts. There’s no message. It’s just facts. It’s absolutely valid to want a statement with more bite when things feel this dire, but the tweet you chose to quote was just simple facts.

Letting the average American know their citizenship will not protect them from ICE could be effective in getting them to pay attention and care.

Either way, this is reading a lot into a simple statement of facts. They were citizens and they were murdered by their own country’s leadership.

Counter-messaging those lies with simple facts is important. I imagine that’s why their citizenship was included in the post.

This is also why DHS is rushing to claim that both civilians were actually domestic terrorists.

Because that’s what makes this month’s ICE shootings such an escalation. A federal agency that claims to stand for protecting Americans has now murdered two law abiding American citizens. This doesn’t mean that other instances of ICE violence are justified or lawful.
