Yeah, I would describe my appearance as definitely not flashy, and generally pretty "clean", so I'm sure that has some factor

I forgot to mention, this actually worked! I got a room far away from the elevator. Unfortunately, this hotel is directly in the flight path of the nearby airport so elevator noise is not as much of a concern as the passenger planes taking off or landing every few minutes.

I watched "Disco's Revenge" documentary on the plane and it was excellent. The arc of disco, the culture, and the subsequent backlash is *highly* relevant for everything we're dealing with today. Great documentary.

It seems you can select a room in the Hilton App for check in. I have picked a room that is far away from the elevator. I guess when I get there late tonight I'll find out if this worked or not.
