I only applied to one university and my wise elder sister said that with my grades, my best bet was to „choose something obscure in the liberal arts“ - I had *no idea* what I was signing up for, but I dutifully followed my course plan and never looked back!

Apropos of nothing, I just realized that I have not listened to even one minute of screaming metalcore since September 7th of 2025. 🤷🏻‍♀️

*precariously…

Also because it needs to be said: I only saw this deadline bc the editors cc’d my personal email address. I haven’t seen my work email for… a while 😂

I’m currently on leave but was given edits over the weekend that were DUE MONDAY. I did them because I’m a preciously employed immigrant and publishing is what I pretend will someday secure my career but good lord, editors! Slow Science would change my life, fr

Peer review is not there for you to tell experts in the field how you'd prefer the style of the paper to be, or what method or analysis you have a clear bias for.

Your job is to check for correctness, spot errors or gaps, protect the integrity of the scientific method, not piss on others.

Chat, are linguists really using ‘decompose’ as a synonym for ‘parse’ these days or is this ChatGPT nonsense?

My spring/summer course is called “Language Ideologies in a Galaxy Far, Far Away”. There is so much good material, I am so very tired of my students’ media studies being done badly, and this is how I’m going to marry all my many academic loves into a single special interest polycule.

Screenshot of a headline in German which reads “Diese Star-Wars-Serie ist gefloppt, hat aber wohl ein wichtiges Geheimnis gelüftet.“ (this Star Wars show flopped, but it revealed a big secret.)

Today I learned that floppen is a stative verb

Isn’t this the ‘complicating action’ that started the Trojan war and sorta resulted in the founding of Rome?

What might it feel like to reach a state where your body’s density perfectly matches your surroundings? Their buoyant bodies are filled with ammonium chloride, which is lighter than seawater, helping them to conserve energy while traveling. 1,729 m #ArgentinianDeepSeeps

Pottery drinking cup shaped like an animal’s head. The vessel is glossy black, featuring a rounded snout, raised eyes, and a handle. A red-digured banquet scene encircles the lower part. The cup is photographed against a plain light background

Weekend timeline cleanse!

A #Greek rhyton in the shape of a #dog's head. 🐕🐶

Vessels such as this were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, their contents had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down

Overall it was a passing performance at the level I needed, which is what matters. But man, I never thought I’d be having to process the relationship between this deeply personal part of my life and how that’s quantified to complete strangers. Surreal.

Results: perfect scores on the oral exam and reading comprehension, near-perfect on ‘language building blocks’ and listening comprehension, and… near-failing on the writing.

THIS is why I cried a few times prepping. I speak German and it is one of my languages now, but I don’t speak telc-German.

I had to take a German test recently, the studying for which brought me to tears multiple times because I was unavoidably confronted with the fact that my German has largely been *acquired* and not *learned*

As a linguist, this is my ideal approach to language. As an immigrant, it was damaging.

Take a second and think before posting the easy Eeyore reply. You might have something substantive to say instead. Or, even better, you can say nothing at all.

If you are anxious and sad about the state of the world, that's fine, and there are plenty of strategies for dealing with that. But I think you already know that drive-by online dooming isn't a strategy. It's selfish and adolescent. It's a contagion that only spreads the worst of you, not the best.

If you’re a person that celebrates Epiphany, remember that the magi engaged in righteous civil disobedience when they took another road home and didn’t snitch to Herod. The lesson is that the right thing is often the opposite of what elected leaders want you to do.

Someone told me that being my friend was ‘really postmodern’ (I have to choose to read this one as a compliment, which, res ipsa etc etc)

No shade to TESOL/CC comrades; my family would never have been able to afford to send me to a 4yr school for an entire degree- my local junior college was the foundation of my eventual BA.

This year I saw someone brand themselves online as a ‘former Professor of English’ and it turns out they were a TESOL adjunct at a community college for one semester.

I can’t exactly explain it, but this is the vibe I want to bring in 2026.
