we have years to get into this one....
that depends on the kind of consumption that is enabled. When women do all the work on the cotton fields, for example, and men don't do anything for months until it is payday...and they go run off and drink the profits instead of fixing the roof, paying the veterinarian etc. etc.....
time for someone to write a book about the assumption that higher consumption necessarily yields poverty and/or inequality reduction!
On that we are in total agreement. This problem is actually one of the reasons that I got into this business. The income-centric poverty framing that was going on around the African cotton issue - and its limits - got me my start. Maybe somebody will give us $ to create/innovate better metrics...;)
Thanks for the links. There is just so much noise around poverty and PPPs and what kind of poverty is being measured. I can't understand why global development institutions are so income centric when for decades we have all known that poverty is about WAY more than income.
with poverty EVERYTHING depends on where the line is drawn. you can get a better picture of the state of equity in society through looking at inequality. Also: my 5th book tackled the limits of Our World in Data & their system maintenance boosterism....
Less Trump, More Trumpet!!
This is incredibly on point.
Spot oil prices grab the news, but itâs the impact weâre about to witness to petrochemical and derivative production that should really scare the shit out of folks.
Itâs the sort of shock that could ripple through our global industrial economy for many months.
The rules-based international order is not your mean, nagging mum, preventing you doing cool, fun things
The rules-based international order is you, as a grown up with a significant amount of power, agreeing yourself not to do idiotic stuff that imperils everyone around you
Food prices were already rising before this latest war began... with oil and fertilizer prices rising, food prices are likely to rise further and drive up world food insecurity.

The only hilarious thing is how bad it is at being funny.
We need much, much more of this!
Polymarket has created a betting market on the use of nuclear weapons. Everyone involved in this should be put in prison for life.
Only a 2% drop and then on to the irrational exuberance of the dip buyers....What a joke of a way to mismanage the common wealth of humanity.
Polymarket defends its decision to allow betting on war as âinvaluableâ
Cher Monsieur Macron, avez-vous une place pour nous, les Canadiens, sous votre grand et magnifique parapluie nucléaire?
The war on Iran likely brings a new oil price shock and windfall profits.
So, who stands to win?
Our research shows: Last time around (2022), the US reaped the largest fossil fuel profits of any country ($377bn). 50% went to the top 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. Ađ§”
Canada would have been better off saying nothing. You can detest the regime in Iran without supporting chaos. www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/stat...

Another clear rationale for Canada's pension funds reduce their holdings of US-listed/connected/registered companies and rapidly diversify their portfolios to more reliable partners....
This one hits hard.
To be perfectly clear, he is addressing a gathering of leaders that is essentially the Hall of Fame of global kleptocrats, for whom he has already set a table ante of $1 billion to play.

So it would be the "Grifter Shakedowns Tracker"
Stop calling them deals: they are straight up grifter shakedowns
