Wow. Ellie Aghayeva — the Columbia student detained by ICE this morning — has been released and posted this on her Instagram.

Comes after NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his concern on the arrest to Trump in a meeting just earlier.

Regulate platforms, not children – Commissioner urges caution over social media bans - Commissioner for Human Rights - www.coe.int Strasbourg 23 February 2026

Several European countries are considering social media bans for children. We must regulate platforms, not children.
I urge caution:
✅ Focus on "safety by design"
✅ Demand algorithmic transparency
✅ Enforce the #DSA & #HumanRights standards

We have done some work looking at Courier - which has a more sophisticated and open approach, but you could argue employs a similar funding /targeting model - even if it has very noticeable differences to Metric. It’s more like Scorecard

Yes - you know better than most the issues of how do you determine political orientation of media. I personally liked Fake News - but we all know what happened to that …

💯… right wing propaganda - would certainly work for most of what we see

You can add ‘right wing’ to any of those…I have an ongoing useful conversation with Courier etc about difference/sameness and how to classify this. It’s also an international phenomenon - where left/right is less obviously the issue (Putin anyone?)

Every year we have an earnest attempt to mend the terminology - but then you also end up with the problem of widespread adoption making it hard to find your work if not tagged with the dreaded label…I do think it needs a better catch all we can all agree to use as a classifier

Exposing the “‘pink slime’ journalism” of Journatic If you care about local news, then you must listen to a report on “This American Life,” broadcast last weekend, that exposes a scandal whose importance can’t be overstated. The story is about a com…

Yes I think the research is still one of the key things we do but the terminology has outrun its descriptive usefulness. The first time I came across it was when @dankennedy.net put up this excellent post in 2012 dankennedy.net/2012/07/05/e...

.. we @towcenter didn’t originate it but definitely inadvertently fired it up with our original research in 2019/2020 . What we have tried to do (more than once) is find a better term that gets traction - partisan paid news, dark money sites, pay to play etc. . Propaganda covers it ? Ideas welcome

No. The NYT is a news company, but it has great games as part of the package. They have stickiness, great UX but also a community drawn together by similarities developed through their culture/journalism/ news….however you describe it. Puzzles as a standalone would flop - even the same puzzles.

Judge Cannon has just denied @knightcolumbia.org & @weareoversight.bsky.social motions to intervene and permanently barred DOJ from disclosing Jack Smith's report. She says (again) that Smith was appointed unconstitutionally, and that the report is the fruit of the unconstitutional appointment.

Trump's steep cuts to public service jobs and STEM research has not saved much money at all. While, naturally, defense contractors continue to make up the biggest share of government contracts.

The country is losing years of talent to the private sector and to other countries. trib.al/yL4uzHA

Tracking Efforts To Restrict Or Ban Teens from Social Media Across the Globe Several countries have passed—and many others are considering—restrictions or bans on teens accessing social media platforms.

Governments worldwide are moving to restrict youth access to social media — from Australia’s nationwide under-16 ban to fast-moving proposals in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Tech Policy Press is tracking these legislative efforts across continents and jurisdictions. 40 countries on the map:

The hidden ICE blueprint that should horrify every American | Will Bunch An internal Department of Homeland Security document shows how ICE plans to cram thousands of detained human beings inside a Georgia warehouse.

What's more shocking than ICE's plan to cram as many 8,500 humans into massive, soul-crushing warehouses?

Seeing the actual DHS floor plan that echoes slavery ships and history's worst gulags with no rec space but a gun range for guards

What we are learning about AI and energy use in Trump’s America is that data is in fact the old oil

If you read the piece I posted from 2011 - I think it makes clear the timeline, and that this is something which hung over Brown, created the tensions and was repeated (frequently) by the press. I take your point about the gap - I do think it was a devastating critique of him even at distance

I hit the BBC website paywall in the US for the first time today. I am not paying it - not just because I have already paid (via my ongoing license fee) - but because as an ad-strewn website with awful UX and some frankly v odd editorial choices …it isn’t very good.

Meanwhile the “psychologically flawed” Gordon Brown, having enacted the most redistributive economic policies in the UK for the past 50 years, and saving the UK from full impact of 2008 - is still engaged in acts of public service….9/
