... “But there is, it seems to me, also a conflict present in more and more parts of the world, between the media and journalism. Between the industry and the craft. Experience shows that, under autocratic regimes and dictatorships, the industry and the craft are more and more incompatible.”

Let's be clear about what the "SAVE Act" is all about, another phase of the "rigged election" strategy. Trump is exploiting the voter fraud myth he created to pass laws and enact policies that will make it harder to vote, suppress votes, cause confusion, & sow distrust democracy. Rinse. Repeat.
key questions for journalists to ask: did the military consider any of the risks to human life or the environment when bombing an oil facility in/near a city of close to 10 million? if US did it, was it a result of hegseth's rejection of the law of war?
ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
They’ve already sent her to Louisiana.
Meanwhile, CNN rages at a journalism problem it created. Goes by the name of Jennings.,@status.news reports.

I wrote this post hours before the Associated Press announced a new partnership with Kalshi.
Wow. Ellie Aghayeva — the Columbia student detained by ICE this morning — has been released and posted this on her Instagram.
Comes after NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his concern on the arrest to Trump in a meeting just earlier.
Several European countries are considering social media bans for children. We must regulate platforms, not children.
I urge caution:
✅ Focus on "safety by design"
✅ Demand algorithmic transparency
✅ Enforce the #DSA & #HumanRights standards

Checked to see if I misread ‘destroying’ as ‘restoring’
We have done some work looking at Courier - which has a more sophisticated and open approach, but you could argue employs a similar funding /targeting model - even if it has very noticeable differences to Metric. It’s more like Scorecard
Yes - you know better than most the issues of how do you determine political orientation of media. I personally liked Fake News - but we all know what happened to that …
💯… right wing propaganda - would certainly work for most of what we see
You can add ‘right wing’ to any of those…I have an ongoing useful conversation with Courier etc about difference/sameness and how to classify this. It’s also an international phenomenon - where left/right is less obviously the issue (Putin anyone?)
Every year we have an earnest attempt to mend the terminology - but then you also end up with the problem of widespread adoption making it hard to find your work if not tagged with the dreaded label…I do think it needs a better catch all we can all agree to use as a classifier
Yes I think the research is still one of the key things we do but the terminology has outrun its descriptive usefulness. The first time I came across it was when @dankennedy.net put up this excellent post in 2012 dankennedy.net/2012/07/05/e...
.. we @towcenter didn’t originate it but definitely inadvertently fired it up with our original research in 2019/2020 . What we have tried to do (more than once) is find a better term that gets traction - partisan paid news, dark money sites, pay to play etc. . Propaganda covers it ? Ideas welcome
Exactly right…
No. The NYT is a news company, but it has great games as part of the package. They have stickiness, great UX but also a community drawn together by similarities developed through their culture/journalism/ news….however you describe it. Puzzles as a standalone would flop - even the same puzzles.
Just sent this to my students ….as it’s AI fail test week in reporting …
