I didn't know what to expect when I saw Sirât. It's the story of an older Spanish man and his young son looking for his missing daughter among European rave crews in the Moroccan desert. Think of all the possible contradictions within the culture clash. Pretty harrowing and challenging. Excellent.
The early years of the regime were the warning signs so there the dreamers are conformist or resistant. As the book proceeds to when the total horror was unleashed, the nightmares are overwhelming. It's a slow and ultimately terrifying process to which to pay attention right now.
Fascinating study of people's dreams who were constantly bombarded with Nazi propaganda and physical intimidation in the 1930s. Interesting that only those who actively resisted in real life maintained their agency when in the dream state.

Jackdaws tentatively explore the potential of this nesting hole in an old hedgerow Oak.
I have known Tawny, Barn & Little Owls to nest or roost in this tree & such wonderful nesting holes are hard to find.
They are very cautious as to who they might encounter.
Fortunate and grateful to be part of this editorial collective which still pursues all the good things of academic endeavour, ie theoretical debates and rigorous analysis, which are discussed in-person in lively editorial committee meetings.
And not many good things like this are left in academia.

Last night a film about young Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan free on SBS if you're in Australia. Fascinating biopic set in early 20th century about the struggles of an intuitive genius having to struggle with the pomposity and racism of Cambridge University.

Looking at the homepage of all of our news organisations, you'd be excused to think that war is happening on a different planet, and its effects are limited to costly/inconvenient supply chain disruptions. It's like we're not living through history. (See also: muted, cowardly coverage of Gaza.)
“At the end of the day, the best measure of the humanity of any society is the life and happiness of its children. We live in a rich society with poor children, and that should be intolerable.”

R.I.P. Joseph “Country Joe” McDonald, frontman of counterculture folk-rock icons Country Joe And The Fish. He wrote the Berkeley band’s most enduring songs including the Vietnam War protest anthem “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag” and “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine,” a Hot 100 hit. McDonald was 84.

An actor asked what he should primarily work toward. Grotowski answered, 'Sincérité in extemis, mais lés details en cristal,' which in English means what it sounds like: sincerity at its most extreme, but details in crystal.
