Credits rolled for DK Bananza. The number of layers stretched a bit, but the final few battles were great. Couldn't help but bob my head when the music started rolling.

The Staff Engineer's Path: A Guide for Individual Contributors Navigating Growth and Change. Written by Tanya Reilly.

The Staff Engineer's Path: A Guide for Individual Contributors Navigating Growth and Change. Written by Tanya Reilly.

The Staff Engineer's Path
A GUIDE FOR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS NAVIGATING GROWTH AND CHANGE

For years, companies have rewarded their most effective engineers with management positions. But treating management as the default path for an engineer with leadership ability doesn't serve the industry well-or the engineer. The staff engineer's path allows engineers to contribute at a high level as role models, driving big projects, determining technical strategy, and raising everyone's skills.

This in-depth book shows you how to understand your role, manage your time, master strategic thinking, and set the standard for technical work. You'll read about how to be a leader without direct authority, how to plan ahead to make the right technical decisions, and how to make everyone around you better, while still growing as an expert in your domain.

By exploring the three pillars of a staff engineer's job, Tanya Reilly, a veteran of the staff engineer track, shows you how to:
β€’ Take a broad, strategic view when thinking about your work
β€’ Dive into practical tactics for making projects succeed
β€’ Determine what "good engineering" means in your organization

Tanya Reilly has over twenty years of experience in software engineering, most recently working on architecture and technical strategy as a senior principal engineer at Squarespace. Previously she spent twelve years at Google, responsible for some of the largest distributed systems on the planet. She's an organizer and host of the LeadDev StaffPlus conference. Originally from Ireland, she now lives in Brooklyn.

Buttermilk Graffiti: A Chef's Journey to Discover America's New Melting-Pot Cuisine. Written by Edward Lee.

Buttermilk Graffiti: A Chef's Journey to Discover America's New Melting-Pot Cuisine. Written by Edward Lee.

American food is a story of mash-ups. Immigrants arrive, cultures
collide, and out of the push and pull come exciting new dishes and flavors. But that surprising first bite is only the beginning. What about the people and traditions behind the food? Driven by deep curiosity and a lively appetite to explore new food and talk to the people who make it, chef Edward Lee spent two years traveling across America to visit the front lines of our ever-changing culinary landscape. The resultβ€”in sixteen vibrant chapters that trace his journey from a working-class town in Massachusetts to Galveston Bay to the far reaches of Seattle-is a fascinating and ever-evolving picture of American cuisine. Plus forty recipes, created by Lee and inspired by the people he met around the country and the food they served, that bring these stories right into our own kitchens.

EDWARD LEE is the author of Smoke & Pickles; the chef/owner of
610 Magnolia, MilkWood, and Whiskey Dry in Louisville, Kentucky; and culinary director of Succotash in Washington, D.C., and National Harbor, Maryland. Find him on Instagram and Twitter at @chefedwardlee.

New books have arrived.

One of them describes the staff engineer, a role that isn't commonly defined in the games industry.

The other is chef Edward Lee's book about his travels through American cuisine.

Reinvent the Wheel | Matthias Endler One of the most harmful pieces of advice is to …

It's good to reinvent the wheel sometimes!

Great post by Matthias Endler.

It helps understanding how wheels work, how you can fix them when broken, how to make better wheels if really needed, or how to find creative use cases for wheels by thinking outside the box.

Credits rolled for Crashlands 2. There were some really great peaks in their humor. The music towards the last few hours constantly reminded me of a Muse track.

Been spending my evenings for the past week playing Crashlands 2. It's such a fun and goofy game.

Butterscotch Shenanigans sent out a newsletter with their Discord link. While tempting, I want to avoid spoilers. A feeling similar to the modern day strategy guide that I don't want to open?

Crashlands 2 released yesterday. A humorous survival crafter adventure.

I played it for several hours today on iPhone with a Backbone controller and everything works great. It's not apples to apples, but I appreciate the lighter weight and grip compared to portable gaming consoles.

Dead Talents Society was tonight's viewing. A low-key release on Netflix today of a horror comedy produced out of Taiwan about ghosts chasing fame. Very goofy and funny.

Thanks for sharing! Before I had my coffee, my head had the wild idea that there was somehow a mouse sensor underneath one of those keyboards.

Tangentially, I was looking at keyboards that have those IBM TrackPoint nubs. Something nice about the close access like your setup solves.

Hard to say how many AAA places do this, but I don't think there are many and it's certainly something that would be nice to see more of.

There were some years working at a studio where I took part in an annual game jam culture. Something about being silly and getting it done in 2-3 days and sharing it with dozens of other people doing the same thing. It was creatively refreshing and reset peoples' brains a bit.

Which sadly makes the "Run Under One Process" setting in UE so difficult to maintain, and renderless load testers a pipe dream.

I'm thru the first few episodes of Frieren. It has a very gentle and heartwarming storytelling style, similar to Natsume's Book of Friends.
