I'm hoping the rise of progressive Christians in public life will push back on some of this monstrosity. And I really liked this from the Colbert-Talarico interview Bari Weiss didn't want people to see.
At root this is the most depraved thing about right wing evangelical Christianity: asking god for forgiveness is about meaning it and proving through your actions that you mean it, not “God whispered to me that I’m all good so shut the fuck up about it already lol”

The way you know they mean “race” and not culture is that Americans have many common and overlapping cultures, but he doesn’t see this because he thinks of race as an exclusive category. They don’t want a “common culture” open to all participants, they want race hierarchy.

Amongst other things, this again highlights the core point about due process. It’s bad enough to be in a “show me your papers” situation, but your precious citizen/non-citizen, “legal”/“illegal” distinctions are meaningless when you can’t prove anything to authorities because they don’t give a shit.
