Everything that I have done with every minute of my day since 8:30 AM has been either (1) trying to fix a government error or (2) a completely pointless client emergency which the government created for no good reason

which is pretty much the state of immigration law practice as of March 2026

There's something deeply obscene and broken about the fact that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are bombing elementary schools in an illegal war of aggression, and there's still a sense among the opposition that it has to be explained in terms of gas prices in order to get American voters to care.

Colbert: Why even on that level do you think it’s important to keep the separation not just for the state but for the church?

Talarico: Well, because we are called to love all our neighbors, including our Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Seek, agnostic, atheist neighbors. And forcing our religion down their throats is not love. [Loud applause] It’s why I fought so hard for that sacred separation in our First Amendment.

Because my granddad, he raised me to believe that boundary between church and state doesn’t just benefit the state or our democracy, although it certainly does, but it also benefits the church.

Because when the church gets too cozy with political power, it loses its prophetic voice, its ability to speak truth to power, its ability to imagine a completely different world. And this separation between church and state is something we have to safeguard. It’s something we have to fight for.

I'm hoping the rise of progressive Christians in public life will push back on some of this monstrosity. And I really liked this from the Colbert-Talarico interview Bari Weiss didn't want people to see.

At root this is the most depraved thing about right wing evangelical Christianity: asking god for forgiveness is about meaning it and proving through your actions that you mean it, not “God whispered to me that I’m all good so shut the fuck up about it already lol”

Museum sign showing a roaring sabretooth cat. A small child is included for size comparison, and looks like he's about to boop it.

Evey day, despite a dominant culture of hyperindividualism and alienation, regular people are engaging in incredible acts of community defense, collective care, and mutual aid.

Every day, people are already planting seeds of the new world in the ashes of the old.

We are deciding right now whether we want to be a country with ethnic cleansing and concentration camps.

The way you know they mean “race” and not culture is that Americans have many common and overlapping cultures, but he doesn’t see this because he thinks of race as an exclusive category. They don’t want a “common culture” open to all participants, they want race hierarchy.

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

Amongst other things, this again highlights the core point about due process. It’s bad enough to be in a “show me your papers” situation, but your precious citizen/non-citizen, “legal”/“illegal” distinctions are meaningless when you can’t prove anything to authorities because they don’t give a shit.

A layer of snow a few inches deep covers a porch and backyard. A cats paw prints lead out into the snow and don't return. (Don't worry he just circled around the house and came in through his cat door)

Ricky is off having a snow day adventure! 🌨️
Happy Caturday 💕

"On earlier transports, some of the guards were simply, kindly types...one would have found their company not too objectionable on the journey. Now I am transfixed with terror. Oafish, jeering faces, in which one seeks in vain for even the slightest trace of human warmth." 2/2

I keep flashing back to one of Etty Hillesum's letters from Westerbork labor camp, the last stop before Auschwitz:
"When I think of the faces of that squad of armed, green-uniformed guards--my God, those faces!..." 1/2 #ice

Something important to understand about ICE thugs in the Twin Cities is that they're harassing innocent kids and parents at bus stops and schools every single day. Even after the Pretti shooting. It's terrorism.

They murdered him in cold blood, and then they lied and called him a terrorist for trying to help his neighbours.

They’ll do it to anyone.

I am in shock and my heart is racing after watching this video. This cannot -- and should not -- be real, yet it is. (WARNING this video is very disturbing)

Executed An ICE Shooting in Minneapolis and the Collapse of Lawful Authority

In a democracy, law enforcement derives its authority not from weapons or uniforms, but from adherence to the law, internal discipline, and the confidence of the public it serves. When accountability disappears, legitimacy collapses. open.substack.com/pub/alexande...

I think my least favorite quality in a person, one that is so often praised as an asset or virtue, is: "doesn't take no for an answer." We're living through an extended nightmare of what that looks like when brought to its logical conclusion.
