I think it is easier to hand-wring over language than to acknowledge the systematic issues often at play. I've also encountered people *within* groups having wildly opposing views on how they should be described - for example fierce debates over "disabled people" vs "people with disabilities".

UK deaths of 1,611 homeless people in 2024 is record high Most are linked to suicide or drugs, with spice and nitazines increasingly deadly.

It is an absolute scandal that we essentially stopped homelessness in 2020, and now we are here.

Building new homes is no bad thing, but there also needs to be some actual commitment to improving and maintaining things at street level here. What could be a vibrant community space by a major train station is grotty, neglected and depressing.

β€˜Stay true to yourself – and fly closer to the sun’: what I’ve learned from 50 years of rejection As a writer, I have been rejected thousands of times, and it initially led to shock, denial and anger. Then I accepted it. Here’s what you can gain from doing so too

What a lovely, inspiring piece this is. I'd quite happily read a whole series about writers' rejections - the thing that happens most, but that we hear about the least.

Been watching old episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and it's amazing how different shared cultural touchpoints were in the late 80s/early 90s compared to now. Comedians who would reference Joyce, German Expressionist cinema, Greek drama - and audiences who would get the joke!

I can't quite get my head around how a brewery with beers on prominent display in every single supermarket can't make money.

Bad photographs from an overcast afternoon I had some time to kill waiting for a bus and so had a little play with the Nomo Cam app. The app replicates old camera styles and I stuck to one of the free ones on offer, that essentially has the…

My local CAMRA consistently puts an underwhelming Spoons in the guide ahead of loads of decent places and when I've chatted to some members it's clear they value price and choice while not having much of a clue about quality.

Brit Card's main goal will be to move as much public money into the private sector as possible...just like every Labour policy!

There's definitely some missing pages, vaguely remember him saying some people didn't want certain pages shared...so originals are definitely better!

Ooh, very nice! I got rid of all mine many years ago, but pleased there are scans online of the glory years before both papers lost their way. I still miss the weeklies and think the music industry would be in a better place if we still had them.

I can't get my head around anyone having a concrete wall surrounding a football pitch. It's insane. It's grossly irresponsible. RIP Billy Vigar.

I see the local Spoons retains its spot in the Good Beer Guide. A real shame considering how many good independent pubs there are in the area, generally serving better beer. But I guess it's a case of never mind the quality, feel the width!

There is absolutely a place for process, paper trails etc but there's a lot to be said for a quick chat to clear things up and to introduce a little humanity to the workplace. It is an underrated skill.

There's a lot of vitriol towards queuing in pubs, so I thought it was time someone looked at them from a more positive perspective...
