Florida’s ocean economy depends on science | Column From sharks to plankton, ocean life matters deeply to Florida.

It's not just Florida, the US ocean economy depends on science. Great piece by Dr. Dennis McGillicuddy, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)!πŸ§ͺ🌊

One of our paper from 2016 on the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on crops was cited in the DOE report commissioned by the Trump administration, giving misleading conclusions that rising CO2 emissions are beneficial to agriculture.

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧡

Opinion | Why U.S. dominance at sea is shrinking The U.S. still has an advantage on the waves, but ocean science needs more β€” not less β€” investment.

Read this from @pdemenocal.bsky.social, @msleinen.bsky.social, and John Richardson, retired Navy admiral, whose son was my student, about how investing in ocean science is not just about curiosity, but about ensuring our future readiness, resilience, and national security. 🌊

Please read this OpEd in the Wa Post by @pdemenocal.bsky.social. Federal investment into fundamental research about our ocean planet has led to profound discoveries with direct implications for national security. (h/t: @ashevenell.bsky.social)

A record increase in atmospheric CO2 according to data released by NOAA gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/..., much higher than projected in the Global Carbon Budget essd.copernicus.org/articles/17/....

This occurred in the presence of an El NiΓ±o (red bars, data also from NOAA!).

Time series from 1880 to 2023 showing steadily rising global temperatures and an estimate record for 2024.

With the October data in GISTEMP, it is almost certain that 2024 will be a new annual temperature record.

Best estimate is for 1.47Β°C above pre-industrial, but it could be above 1.5Β°C depending on the this month and next (of course).

With the (belated) September data now in, the updated prediction is that 2024 is almost certain to be a new annual surface temperature record, and possibly by more than 0.1ΒΊC. 50% change of exceeding 1.5ΒΊC above the late 19th C.
