Why?

Because today is Ghost Shark Day. Also, I just learned something that’s kinda cool about one species of ghost shark - the spotted ratfish.

Scales are already pretty unreliable with gars, fin rays too. But I’m not sure about the molecular clock markers and otoliths…we may have to check that out for gars!

Almost everyone I know that dives in the bigger lakes in North Texas has talked about gar and catfish around the dams or near the old river channels. They do indeed get BIG!

How old is Garliath, the massive Alligator Gar?

It’s difficult to say with +accuracy without lethal sampling and extracting otoliths (ear stones with annual rings like a tree).

Growth is very slow after 6 feet long. Given locality, morphology, I’d guess at least 50, but could be over 90 years old!

Thanks for the kind word Lucas! It was truly amazing to encounter such an animal, and glad we could collect data on the fish and release her back. Appreciate all your “saltier” work too!
