The consequences of this will be felt not for weeks, not for years, but for decades

Mistral is the best European option. The trajectory is right. But "best European option" and "competitive with the frontier" are not the same sentence right now.

I'm rooting for Europe to close that gap. This hackathon just made it harder to be uncritically optimistic.

Cool thanks. That's exactly what I wanted and I agree, we need an EU competitor desperately.

So part of the reason for asking for EU competition is that at least our grids are decarbonising and quite fast: Mistral is building centres in France and Sweden - but this technology is not going away and we really need to distinguish between slop LLMs and genuinely useful applications of ML

Absolutely my experience too. It needs careful checks but can easily enhance productivity on tasks that would otherwise be time dumps

Also this turns out to be a much more controversial take over on mastodon than over here. But at least people are also answering with their thoughts ..
