Can anyone explain what this photo shows? It was taken from the air over Lockerbie yesterday
The larger white patches look very much like burnt areas that have snow on, though they are surprisingly regular. Complete guess though!
So it looks like some kind of land use pattern where snow is picking out one kind of field and not the intervening fields, perhaps because of . Though I admit the steeply sloping (?) region on the left is very mystifying.y guess would be alternate regions of either trees or burnt moorland for grouse
What do we risk when we undervalue the weather forecast? The dismantling of NCAR brought to mind this old #Radiolab piece on the Weather Report

I'm not sure the one I mentioned is, but there are a whole bunch of them, also compared with dynamical models here: iri.columbia.edu/our-expertis...
And here is the link to the Climate Brink - why don't we have an edit button here!

Interestingly I think all the models here are classic numerical models, a Chinese deep learning model for forecasting ENSO also shows a strong El Nino (www.nature.com/articles/s41...).
2025 seems to offer a good test bed for the different forecasts.. #ML #AI
Really good piece from @hausfath.bsky.social about #ElNino on #TheClimateBrink.
We have been thinking a lot about this in the @esaclimate.bsky.social #PISCO project - there are important ENSO related effects on #Antarctic ice sheet.
As I’ve been writing for weeks, the paradox has arrived, Ukrainians are helping protect U.S. service personnel, while Trump rewards Russia with billions, the very ally of Iran helping them target American troops in the Middle East.
You have to be kidding me, now the Russians are celebrating 🤬
Yesterday, the Finnish government put a proposal to parliament to revise the Nuclear Energy Act.
2 major shifts underway. The government wants to:
1) Pave the way for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 🇫🇮.
2) Modify the total ban on nuclear weapons on 🇫🇮 territory.

"Palantir CEO Alex Karp thinks his AI technology will lessen the power of 'highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat' while increasing the power of working-class men."
Remind me again why Labour is shoving vast public contracts down its throat?
Reaching net zero by 2050 is often framed as a cost burden.
The UK Climate Change Committee’s latest analysis suggests the opposite.
The real risk is fossil fuel dependency.
Weakening the 2030 target now would send the signal to hold back affordable models and failure in 2030 becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Elbilpriser faldt 4% sidste år, da producenter skifter fokus til mindre, billigere modeller. EU's klimakrav presser på, men foreslåede lempelser kan forsinke udviklingen, advarer miljøorganisation.

ANALYSIS: Badenoch and Farage might not want to admit it, but Conservative and Reform plans to scrap net zero whilst boosting the North Sea would actually make the UK even more reliant on gas imports 🤔

My latest for @science.org on the fraught future of NCAR as NSF's deadline nears. It can still go so many ways.

I quibble a bit with the title, how can any knowledge be useless, but there's some lovely examples in this.

Wauw! Hvor har du fundet dem?🤩
For comparison, in France we “collect” 500 tons of various munitions every year (1870, WWI and WWII), and it is estimated that at the current rate we will be rid of them in… 700 years. That doesn't bode well for Ukraine.
