A hand-carved (and sanded, whoo boy, a lot of sanding), shallow bowl made from cherry burl wood. The shape is free-form, following the contours made available by the burl. The grain swirls into curving shapes and "pools." There's a hole toward one side with curved, flaring sides, where a branch had been growing as the burl developed. Creating burls are some trees' reactions to infections by microorganisms. It measures 13-1/2 inches long and 4 inches high.

One more cherry burl piece for today's #BlueSkyArtShow #Wood. This is part of a large burl that gave me two smaller pieces. It was local, from a dead limb on a quite large tree (I like working with salvaged wood). 13-1/2 inches long and 4 inches high, and finished with oil-based polyurethane.
