For the HSL transformations, have you found them to give consistent outputs across colour? I.e. will you eventually move to OKCLH?

23.06.2025 09:23 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0That’s something I can’t wrap my head around yet. Instinctively, I want to push those into another collection called System, which is a refined set of the full primitive list
Primitive (brand modes
> system (refined, light/dark)
> semantic (single mode)
Playing here www.figma.com/design/twnnN...
Whilst this isn’t traditionally deemed best practice, I can see a very strong case for it!
Recently I’ve been thinking that perhaps primitives are where we store the brand modes

08.06.2025 19:34 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Great callout. Do you keep primitives in a single mode?
Figma’s previous token setup had different saturation ramps for light and dark primitives!
Looking forward to it!

06.06.2025 22:28 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Progressively, I guess so! But I think the light/dark AND brand switch at the semantic level is perhaps not the way
06.06.2025 22:05 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I can’t stop thinking about how maybe semantic tokens should be a single mode
A codified name to consolidate a cascade of (aliased) decisions
- Light/dark are system changes
- Brand is a change at the primitive level
Love this!

"Import CSS shadows, create Figma styles" allows you to do just that. You can create variables too
Recently I was building a UI kit from an existing website and rebuilding shadows from CSS was really slow, so built this!
www.figma.com/community/pl...
New plugin published: batch rename variables
It allows you to rename by:
• Find & replace
• Add prefix
• Add suffix
• Change case
You can also revert any name changes.
Should hopefully save a tonne of time!

I've updated the CSS variables Figma plugin!
Noooow, you can export AND import CSS variables. Copy, paste, or upload a CSS file, and it will generate your variables including aliasing ◇
Hopefully makes variable migration a lot easier

😮 okay there’s tomorrow’s homework
Thank you for continuing the conversation!
Weirdly, I was thinking about "design systems limit my creativity" over the weekend and @donnie.damato.design drops this: blog.damato.design/posts/done-w...
Innovation requires deviation, and locking down experimentation is where alignment fails. Maybe we don't need component arbiters anymore?
See you there!

There are arrows pointing to the background color of the expanded row, the content block, and the pills. The arrows all have the same label of "Black 4% opacity".

Enjoying playing around with opacity layering to try and reduce the amount of variables you need to support
