With both of these you were also given a setting to work with. The format of the world lends to creativity.
I've never made a player character out of nothing, but I'm in four different DnD campaigns with vastly different OC's, as it were.
Maybe you can play with perspective/scale in a set world?

Desktop with tv/monitor and a 2nd one covered in sticky notes. The setup is shoved into a corner wall and the area is untidy.
