indie creators are more responsible with NSFW material than corps are. paywalls arn't just for profit, it's to block minors from viewing bc you need to be 18 to have a CC. yet creators are literally barred from posting behind paywalls so it's posted freely, and that's being cited to make legislation
The government is asking for public comments on whether banks should be able to deny you from buying legal goods at their own whim (i.e. how they're cracking down on art)
Tell them you don't want to be told how to spend your money

I think at some point people are going to have to show up outside of the Mastercard HQ with signs and protest this censorship stuff, I feel like there has to be a visible IRL presence where execs work to actually make a dent in this issue
We have to keep complaining:
stop-paypros.neocities.org
The other thing is it gives you different pressure points. Your rep drafted this bill to protect kids, right? Well where are they on gun control to prevent school shootings? Why aren't they seeking to stop bombing Iran or abolish ICE? Why aren't they calling for Epstein Files prosecutions?
I actually realized I have other things to say on this! While it may feel like a lost cause on legislation they drafted, you don't care about only one issue, and they barely care at all. It's worth seeing if there's something that matters to you that you can push them on.
Hey, alongside contacting your representatives, this seems like another thing worth putting a bit of your time into and sharing around. If we could get "reputational risk" taken off the table, even in this current climate, that could create a chilling effect on these kinds of policies
Call 'em anyway and also hope they fall down an elevator shaft, I guess. Work from now to make sure the fact that they wrote it is a dark stain on their record and that they'll never be re-elected or work in politics in any capacity again.
It sucks that our government is our enemy. That they hate us so much. But calling and yelling at them to do their actual fucking jobs is literally the least we can do.
That we have to fight to not drop billions on war and planet-killing AI and letting billionaires get away with atrocities, instead of funding our education system, our healthcare, our libraries, our post office, our museums and arts and the things that make life worth living.
It sucks that we have to fight to get ICE abolished. That we have to fight to not kill Iranians and Palestinians and Venezualans and migrants from around the world who come to our country and American who have lived here their entire lives. That trans people are endangered.
It's so stupid that we have to fight for the things we want. It sucks that we have to fight for HR 2540, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act that would allow disabled people to--get this--receive disability and have more than $2000 at a time in their household.
7661 specifically is trying to make trans existence defined as obscene and keep books from being schools and libraries. It is anti-trans, anti-First Amendment, and some fascist bullshit from the worst sort of folks. I would contend the reps who introduced it should be removed from office.
You should tell your rep to support Section 230 and would hate to see it reformed or gotten rid of, as it's what currently allows the internet to more-or-less function. You should also say you oppose HR 7661, the similarly deceptive "Stop Sexualization of Children Act." Aka, a nationwide book ban.
If you read all the bills that've been lumped into the KIDS Act, there is actually a little bit of potential good targeting gatcha games and AI targeted at minors, but they in no way outweigh the forfeiture of rights required by the other bills, particularly KOSA & SCREEN.
They are made to reduce adult access to adult spaces by forcing internet services to choose between taking your private data (which their servers are generally ill-equipped to securely handle) or to say you deserve that data and they can no longer allow you access. Which sucks.
Oppose, generally, online age verification and ID laws because while, sure, kids shouldn't be accessing adult content. Kids shouldn't be preyed upon by creepy adults, by child gambling games, by AI. Those are all valid concerns, but these bills don't actually address them.
They also make it harder to be LGBTQ+ online (particularly to be trans online). They will remove access to educational resources about things like bodily autonomy. They will drive folks to sites that have somehow even less scruples and more danger. They will make the internet smaller and worse.
You should call your reps. I know they all suck so badly--I know the Congress hates the American people and resents us so much--but you should call. Oppose the "KIDS Act", a bundle of censorious bills that claim to be about kids' safety online, but endanger everyone's data privacy (including kids).
I have a bundle of signed books available in the Lit for Queer Liberation virtual auction up until March 14! Raising money for queer and trans people in Texas and beyond.

A reminder to call your reps today! KOSA has been sandwiched into the KIDS Act and is still a huge censorship threat. You can use this tool- it takes just a few minutes:
