Yes, though some have 2 week half term so may finish sooner but that isn’t introduced in our area until next year (although I suspect working in an FE college we may not do that).

We still have 2 weeks! 😳

Stay hopeful. The challenges you’re facing now have the potential to help you learn, grow and build resilience. Things can and do change

Rather than despairing about a difficult situation, find ‘Active Hope’ by looking for the best possible response and taking the next step, however small

I am crazy enough to do this with 3 young children 😳

In #mathstoday I underestimated how difficult students would find it to extract information from spreadsheets when looking at #coremaths past paper questions

That is sad 😔 totally understandable though if workload is unmanageable.

Hope I won’t have to leave either!

Actually really encouraged that my yr 1 student asked me about this.

Thanks 🤩 I think I possibly did see this at some point but I had forgotten about it. I’ll definitely make sure to check the year 2 textbook in the future too. For topics like this where it is so closely linked would you teach ax+b in yr 1 or wait to yr 2 to introduce it?

08.10.2025 18:49 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Thanks for explaining. I did wonder if it related to AS or A level since our yr 1 textbook only does (x+a).

In #Alevelmaths syllabus (we do AQA) are they expected to be able to deal with fractional roots / factors of form (ax+b) using the factor theorem?

Had an epiphany yesterday: teach angles questions as a series of reasons with numbers as an after thought instead of other way round.

I would not claim parents make “better teachers” or “worse teachers”

I’m starting to understand why so many mums leave teaching. It can be relentless and shows no forgiveness or slack for the rest of life. #teachermum

In #mathstoday we did trial and improvement in #coremaths using a core maths platform resource to work out the maximum width of a garden path with enough concrete for 200m^2. A student told me it was fun and got very excited when they managed to find an exact solution with the help of excel drag 🤩

I would be interested to see this

05.10.2025 08:00 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

When you say to be clear, do they have to show anything beyond just filling out the grid?

05.10.2025 07:52 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yes this is the sort of thing I mean. I was looking for a set of these sorts of questions to develop skills in comparing coefficients even if they use other methods for more standard algebraic division questions.

05.10.2025 07:34 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Yes that’s exactly what I was thinking so I was looking for questions that can’t be done without comparing coefficients so they would be forced to develop the skills to use later on. I had been thinking of where there are unknown coefficients.

I literally just spotted that on the slides you shared 😊

04.10.2025 21:31 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I thought that at first too but was thinking I’d see how they get on with the grid method. Thanks for clarifying that either way is ok. Sometimes I worry I’m over simplifying things and missing something out entirely as a result.

04.10.2025 21:28 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

It made me wonder if there are types of questions where comparing coefficients would be necessary, hence my question

04.10.2025 21:20 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 0

To be honest I’m not sure with this being my first year teaching it, perhaps it is! I just went through all the textbook exercises for this chapter which compared coefficients in the worked solutions a lot and found myself constantly thinking but it’s easier with algebraic division.

04.10.2025 21:20 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 3    📌 0

#Alevelmaths - are there any good sets of questions on factors of polynomials specifically the sort where they would need to compare coefficients and can’t use algebraic division?
