Such an important article about the horrific realities of this awful conflict. Thanks for sharing @milwelfhist.bsky.social
Our first talk of 2026 is on 21 January at the Grosvenor Museum by Prof Tim Grady of @HistArchChester on German War Graves and the British: The Great Exhumation Mission of 1962.
Non-members very welcome [£5 cash/cheque at the door].
Just published online & open access: @tlgrady68.bsky.social 'Nationalising Bodies, Shifting Loyalties: Exhuming the War Dead'. 1000s of national cemeteries in Europe contain the WWI & WWII dead. Yet, determining their nationality was never clear cut. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Ongoing decimation of British universities part 252:
Apx. 1000 academic staff at University of Essex just received formal ‘risk of redundancy’ letters via email.

Fascinating read in the Museum of Liverpool today - striking bio given current politics.
Many thanks to all at the University of Suffolk and @suffolkarchives.bsky.social who hosted yesterday's visit by the Society to meet with historians, archivists and curators from Ipswich and the region bit.ly/3Jsoi5v
Our discussions focused on 'collaborative working with heritage partners' 1/2
Chester FC’s Deva stadium - one of the more unusual places I’ve been asked to speak at… very welcoming audience though.
On Weds 22 October, we visit historians at the University of Suffolk and Suffolk Archives, to discuss partnership working.
Our Ipswich visit includes a guest public lecture by Tim Grady (Chester) and a reception to meet fellow historians and RHS members bit.ly/4medzcd All are welcome #Skystorians
Very much looking forward to visiting…

My hotel bathroom has a very fine example of efficient British plumbing!
In an ideal world, research should leave few environmental scars. But that’s easier said than done for all of us, but I admit that’s even harder starting out from Australia!
I know it’s a drop in the ocean but the climate impact of travel for academic research & conferences needs far greater attention. The Eurostar & Bahn might be slower & pricier but *generally* get you there (German archives if that’s your thing) in the end! #flightfreeresearch
Well worth a read for the scale of AI problems facing us all. I’d like to think universities are capable of adapting, because knowledge, research and critical thinking are more important than ever. But unis need to get on top of this now, rethink assessment etc…

I hope so… I’m feeling the pressure now though!
It was nice to see this. Thanks so much to Church Times and Ian Bradley for the review.
Looking forward to it @ddronline.bsky.social
They’re really trying hard to sell this job! Disappointing that this is seen as a positive…
Chester’s annual Festival of Ideas kicks off next week. On Friday (04/07) I’ll be speaking about what should happen to enemy bodies in times of conflict. Not cheery, but sadly timely. Join me in the Town Hall: festivalofideas.chester.ac.uk/event/war-an...
In a turbulent period of UK political history the treatment of universities has been arguably the defining symbol. Important to so many challenges - growth, local economies, international competitiveness, trade - yet generally treated as an irritation if not ignored completely.
The @royalhistsoc.org writing workshop is a fantastic scheme - it really helped with the final stages of writing, plus it was a nice way to bring people together for discussions and of course food. Anyway, it worked as the book has since appeared! yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300...
