We thank the Palaeontological Association for their support of the 23rd conference of the EAVP in Vilnius. Their commitment to palaeo research & our scientific community is greatly appreciated! @thepalass.bsky.social / #EAVP2026 #ScienceConference #academiccommunity #FossilFriday
New from #RSOS: Use of the notochordal canal as a reliable proxy for prenatal stage, a case study in #Ichthyosauria. Read more: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsos/article... @feikosaur.bsky.social #palaeontology
Just watched the Triassic episode of #TheDinosaurs. Pterosaurs and sauropodomorphs were depicted with fantastic renders!! I unfortunately do have to say that they severely over monsterfied poor Tanystropheus.. Tany, you are beautiful and you have special place in our hearts!
🐬🍼🦖 @forskning.bsky.social www.forskning.no/evolusjon-pa...
Very interesting study by @feikosaur.bsky.social and Erin Maxwell about ichthyosaur fetuses!
Use of the notochordal canal as a reliable proxy for prenatal stage, a case study in Ichthyosauria url: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsos/article...
Last but not least: as notochord retention is a feature in all derived vertebrates, this method is potentially transferable to other groups!
2) Ichthyosaurs have an anterio-posterior developmental grade in their vertebral column, whereby anterior develops earlier. 3) Inferred stage in species with very few fetuses is corroborated by NCI. This will help majorly in staging ichthyosaur fetuses in absence of anything but vertebrae.
It is finally out! In this paper we show an easy way to stage ichthyosaur fetuses based on the relative size of their notochordal canal on their vertebrae (NCI). Important findings: NCI clearly separates fetal stage together with cranium

Oh no. Hearing (via Neil Shubin) that Hans Sues has passed. Woah.
I am quite stunned, incredibly sad news.
Good news: #EAVP2026 website now includes full details of the venues, including bar names and addresses, for the ice-breaking party, auction, & special dinner. eavp2026.weebly.com
The Evolutionary Morphology Research Group (EvoMoRG: www.evomorg.org) at the Department of Palaeontology of the University of Vienna seeks a motivated PhD student (University Praedoc Assistant) as soon as possible.

Arctic plants, ichthyosaurs and more! We received funding from Nordforsk for a Nordic network for convergent evolution #NCEN! It is led by @siribirkeland.bsky.social and me, hosted at the Natural History Museum @uio.no and include researchers with amazing work🥳 www.nordforsk.org/projects/nor...
Another banger by Xavier and colleagues! :)
This #FossilFriday we are pleased to have published the new younginid taxon Scyllacerta from the late Permian of South Africa 🇿🇦
This beautiful aggregation has the holotype and has been in the literature for 30 years as “juvenile Youngina”.

what's in the box? WHATS IN THE BOX??!! :)
New paper from the ECHO project 🥳 Does the upper arm bone tell us the same things as the thigh bone if we look inside?💪🏼🦵🦴 Lead by Mathieu G. Faure-Brac, we investigated how we can expand the available input data to be used in paleophysiological models.

Surprise, there's a fourth paper! Just out today, we segmented the skull of the Permian stem reptile Protorothyris, so you don't have to! Work done with Adam Behlke and @hanssues.bsky.social

Cool to see conodonts as "legal" vertebrates on the European Association of Vertebrate Palaeontologists 2026 conference logo! 😃

We are at #2025SVP and having a great first day! From the ECHO and EXPLAC projects in our group postdocs Mathieu Faure-Brac and @feikosaur.bsky.social. Our marine tetrapod presentation times below 👇
For a belated fossil Friday, a sneak peek on a little side project in the works, any guesses? ;)
‼️‼️Triassic Life just opened @smnstuttgart.bsky.social‼️‼️
For all #Triassic fans, lovers of strange reptiles and the Dawn of the Modern World, this is an absolute MUST!
It also couldn't be more timely with our recent publication @nature.com of the wonder reptile #Mirasaura, which is now on display!
Special congratulations to our own MSc student Marthe who won one of the Best talk awards🥳🐍 @feikosaur.bsky.social
@serpenillus.bsky.social I see what you did there ;)… Your babies are indeed fantastic! 😊
Really excited for everyone to see this next year. My baby looks so good! 😍😍😍 So happy and proud to have been one of the talented group of people who worked in this show!
Surviving earth is going to be epic! Absolutely cant wait! Just posting this newly released still of two unnamed pliosaurs for no particular reason ;)…

Eurhinosaurus mistelgauensis is interesting because it is quite a bit younger than all other known Eurhinosaurus species. It gives us vital information of these ichthyosaurs close to the Middle Jurassic faunal turnover. Art: Andrey Atuchin, used with permission from Urwelt-Museum Oberfranken
