They're also claiming that, like with Gumroad, they'll allow purchasers to continue downloading already purchased products even if they remove that person's page. So there's no need to hesitate to buy from Gumroad, if you were.

Whew, okay, I was able to withdraw the first half or so of the month's sales from Itch. I'm still waiting on the second half, but still, that's a big relief! I was worried they were going to use the whole situation to pull some bullshit and hold onto funds.

The Gumroad guy is interesting. He's a true believer in the potential for AI to make things more efficient. He worked for DOGE briefly, was surprised that his co-workers seemed to care more about breaking things than improving them, and was promptly fired for having principles

Itch was a well crafted site since its inception, and they're clearly coasting on that reputation. Their original niche was indie games that were too small for Steam, but since Steam made it easier for indies to get hosted, that mostly vanished. It's micro-indies and porn now

People got mad at Gumroad because it was run by an annoying techbro who replaced his staff with AI, and Itch is a cute little site that hosts neat little indie games for free... But Gumroad was run at least somewhat competently, and Itch clearly isn't

This whole thing has given me more respect for Gumroad, which handled it at least somewhat decently by comparison. They gave people months of warning, slow-walked the things as much as possible, made sure to pay out creators, and let some people keep their pages for legacy downloads! Way better!

Between that and the payroll delays (up to a month sometimes...) It really feels like they're running on a skeleton crew, without enough people to do the most basic things. Are they practically broke, or just terrible at management? Who knows?!

This is all well AFTER they'd gotten the letter from Collective Shout. They knew that the credit card companies were going to be giving them closer scrutiny than ever before, and they couldn't be bothered to do the most basic efforts at taking down illegal content? Seriously?

People complain about AI content moderation, but there's a good reason big platforms use it; it does a decent job of removing the most obvious offenders, without too many false positives. It's a good way to supplement human content moderation

I don't think Itch was using either of those!

I don't think Itch was doing this intentionally; but word got out they just weren't bothering to pro-actively moderate content, and so the people who had been banned from everywhere else swarmed them.

It was a matter of time until the credit card companies cracked down on that.

I wasn't going out of my way to find anything objectionable, either. Just looking through the top results of "new and popular" comics with "NSFW" or "adult" selected. This stuff was right near the top of those results for everyone to see

Itch just wasn't doing content moderation

I reported a few, partly out of self interest. I knew if that shit stayed up it would be a matter of weeks or months before the credit card companies cracked down hard on EVERYTHING, not just the worst offenders. It was all right there, the site should have been taking it down!

I'm not judging Itch too harshly for having that one rape game on their website, any one game could potentially slip through the cracks. I'm judging them for the fact that, the last few weeks, the results for "new and popular" comics had dozens of obvious deepfake, beastiality, loli, and rape comics

So even though they're more than happy to work with anti-porn religious right groups that would otherwise hate them (much like anti-porn feminists in the 70s and 80s...) Collective Shout is more of a throwback to 90's Tipper Gore anti-violence and "misogyny" morality police shit

They have a history of going after a lot of targets that the usual anti-porn groups wouldn't care about: mainstream games like GTA 5 and Detroit: Become Human, hell they tried to get Snoop Dogg banned from Australia because of misogyny

Second: after reading a bit about them, it seems like Collective Shout are first and foremost a feminist group, which is mildly surprising. Some of the anti-porn groups try to front as being feminists but are clearly a front for the religious right; but CS is the real(ish) deal

This sucks to admit because I've liked Itch as an indie games website for a long time, long before they even started hosting adult content... But they're really just not taking basic aspects of running of the site seriously, to the point where it was irresponsible.

A couple of things:

I was too generous to Itch before. They are in a shitty situation, but it's one they put themselves in, by doing an absolutely shit job of policing content on their website, not warning people, and not expediting payouts to minimize payment seizure.
