Thank you to our Chair, MPs who came along, our panellists, young people and the Minister for such a brilliant discussion on the youth strategy and youth work. Weβll be back in the new year for our next steps on our report on youth work, stay tuned! π
Questions to the Minister included around funding for youth services, how to engage young people who canβt access services, and young futures hubs
Minister for Youth Stephanie Peacock MP set out the themes of the youth strategy, with key points being wanting to give young people access to trusted adults, places to go, and things to do. She also referenced the ability of young people to get involved in the strategy rollout
Our young people and youth worker speakers spoke brilliantly about the need to invest long term into youth funding, the vital importance youth workers have for young people and their futures, and the value of face to face youth work
Volunteer Karen Fulton from Sea Cadets spoke about the importance of volunteers in supporting young people and in helping wider society, as well as the importance of face to face connection in youth work
Chief Executive of National Youth Agency Leigh Middleton said that lots of young people are lacking a trusted adult. He added that statutory services need to be adequately funded and bolstered to ensure every young person has good services in their area
Nathan Singleton, Chief Executive of LifeLine Projects, spoke about the change in youth work since 2000, with youth workers becoming more of a pastoral service and being able to reach young people missed by other services
