"I wish what every addict wishes for: that what we love is good for us." this passing feels extremely personal and layered. knowing his love for smoking and then his struggle with emphysema, his life depending on oxygen tanks. having to remain housebound in his final years bc of the covid pandemic, with no one masking, making it more unsafe for him. having to evacuate the LA wildfires last week, knowing the smoke must have been too much for him. david lynch's birthday is coming up next week, on jan 20, 3 days before mine. my abuela wasn't a smoker, but her husband was. she lived with my family in her final years, needing a constant supply of oxygen tanks to help her breathe. she passed on my birthday as a teenager, jan 23. since then, this time of year for me has always been filled with somber, wintery reflections. melancholic nostalgia. still, no time for regrets! life is worth living! love will always transcend despair!

"I was up this morning at 6am, watching Lynch/Oz, reflecting on how much I love all his works. What can you say? Without David Lynch, we're all poorer. The world is a little less. One of the greatest artists of our time, who left us so many gifts, not least of which was his boundless love of cinema, an art form he shaped for all time.
