Art historian looking for interesting stories in old master auctions

23.02.2026 19:32 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0:-( Wasn't the only one to spot this poster at the charity shop website. Sold for 367 Euro in the end, fair chance of being an original one-of-500 unsigned Warhol from 1967. But bidding more seemed to much of a risk, so many fake Warhols / reproductions out there, and not my area of expertise.
23.02.2026 16:48 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Muller sale; 1926, lot 687 (start of the collection Countess Platen): Style of Willem van Aelst, "Still life", canvass, 72*62cm, no image just Fl200.
Lot 688: Thomas van Apshoven, "Rustic interior", panel, 56*47cm, no image, just Fl310.
Both untraceable, like most ones in this cheaper section.
Daily photo from the Sinebrychoff Museum in Helsinki. Moving away from later Swedish art and entering the Flemish and Dutch Old Masters collection, with Anthonie Palamedesz, "Musical Company", 1632. Not the most refined example of his work, looks almost unfinished on closer inspection.
23.02.2026 08:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Almost done with that terrible "rewrite something completely new" Renault advert at the Olympics. Annoys me more and more every single time.
22.02.2026 15:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Storytelling in 13th c. Norwegian church woodsculpting. Detail from a carved plank in the Historic Museum in Oslo. No idea if they are robbing the guy or doing a medical intervention.
20.02.2026 18:19 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0In US history, that is. Two of the three things above are specifically for US citizens or residents, it's a bit silly to use these as arguments that Hamilton is more decorated than non-US writers. Astrid Lindgren is just one example who I would consider more decorated (and obviously it isn't a race)
20.02.2026 14:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Muller sale, 1926, lot 686 (last lot of the short part IV): Jan Steen, "Family", signed, panel, 60*46cm, Fl13500. A colour postcard was made in the same year. The RKD lists it as an anonymous work, for sale in The Hague in 1968. Wikimedia Commons claims it is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection.
20.02.2026 13:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I see that you have two Wertmullers (he did work in the US for quite a long time, and died there), but the one I can see is of much lower quality than the one I showed, and is indeed very boring. Finland for the win! www.nga.gov/artworks/429...
20.02.2026 11:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Luckily my next posts about the museum head back to the 17th century. Often equally formulaic, but sometimes simply a lot better (though the portraits are rarely as daring, apart from exceptions like some Fontainebleau weird shit).
20.02.2026 11:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Daily image from the Sinebrychoff museum in Helsinki: Adolf Ulric WertmΓΌller (1751-1811), "Portrait of opera singer and actress Beata Charlotta Eckerman", 1784. She had been the official (!) mistress of Charles XIII of Sweden and lived a short but eventful life, as did the painter (but longer).

19.02.2026 19:18 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Muller sale, 1926, lot 684: Jacob Van Ruysdael, "Wooded landscape", signed, panel, 105*125cm, Fl16800 (one of the more expensive). I haven't found it again...
Lot 685, another J. Van Ruysdael, "The Watermill", panel, 56*67cm, Fl11800. Now owned by the Dutch Government. rkd.nl/images/23310
Great miniature, est. at just 60 Euro. Would be great to identify the very detailed castle, might make IDing the sitter possible as well. www.interencheres.com/art-decorati...
19.02.2026 10:26 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Daily photo from the Sinebrychoff Museum in Helsinki. I didn't realise, when I took these, that they were all by Carl Fredrik von Breda, or that he was painting his own family. "Maria de Ron, nΓ©e von Breda", 1785.
19.02.2026 08:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Historic Museum in Oslo has a great collection of remains of sadly demolished Stave churches (only 28 remain in situ). The next days IΒ΄ll end my Norway trip report with some of these salvaged bits, saving the best for last.

18.02.2026 13:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Muller sale, 1926, lot 683: Nicolaas Maes, "Happy Motherhood", signed, 1655, panel, 74*57cm, Fl10,000. Long history, lot of literature, and not a trace after this auction? Study drawing at the British Museum. Version sold may be a contemporary copy. www.britishmuseum.org/collection/o...
18.02.2026 13:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Daily image from the Sinebrychoff museum in Helsinki; another work by Carl Fredrik von Breda, "Jean Martin de Ron", 1802. English in style, not perfect in the face, but the depiction of clothing is spot on. One of the best Scandinavian painters of his time.
18.02.2026 08:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Late Medieval church paintings. From the Historic Museum in Oslo.
17.02.2026 18:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Muller sale, 1926, lot 682 (first of the "collection H..." section): Manner of Joos van Cleve, "Virgin and Child with an Apple", panel, 33*31cm, Fl1000. No image. Composition and dimensions (and presumably quality) identical to this one in the RKD. rkd.nl/images/41777
17.02.2026 15:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Daily photo from my visit to the Sinebrychoff museum in Helsinki: Carl Fredrik von Breda, "State Antiquarian Georg Frans Tihleman", 1790.
17.02.2026 08:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Late 13th c. Norwegian altar painting. Originally with a shiny silver-painted background reflecting the light, but that has disappeared almost completely. Scenes from the life of Mary. From the Historic Museum in Oslo.
16.02.2026 16:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Muller sale, 1926, lot 681: Philips Wouwerman, "Peasants collecting firewood", monogram, panel, 38*31cm. Impossible to trace, but probably similar to this very slightly larger one: rkd.nl/images/4865
16.02.2026 14:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh, hadn't checked which post you replied to, sorry!!! So not about the Munch-Picasso era, but about very early religious art, which is bang on brand for the museum and indeed very interesting! Thank you!
16.02.2026 11:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Didn't even know such influence existed! I guess it was about ca. 1900 art? Seems like a strange topic for the Catharijneconvent, but then again diversity adds some spice to life (oh no, stupid comment, now I can't enter the US for 5 years...)
