I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

It is not too late to act on climate change because climate change is not pass/fail. Every faction of a degree matters and is worth fighting for.

That's not propaganda or wishful thinking. It's evidence-based. Suggesting otherwise is as unscientific as climate denial, and just as damaging.

Blue cities have an odd preference for a romanticized idea of “process” over tangible outcomes. Lengthy approval times for building permits are a glaring example. Communities receive no benefits, only harms, from this endless bureaucracy.

Shared paths where cyclists and pedestrians mix are on the far upper left of this plot: highly preferred by users, but only about as safe as a major street with no bike lane. Separate the modes, friends!

#Switzerland rejected urban freeways. Zurich decided not to build a metro. It began building an S-Bahn commuter train network.

In the Netherlands, train stations have a unique look. In most stations, you will find ample bike parking which is easy to use and close to the platforms.

The bike-train combination creates wins all around, allowing users to travel big distances without depending on a car.

One underappreciated aspect of Dutch urbanism is the care and attention to detail around lighting.

This includes the thoughtful way buildings are lit to enhance their beauty, streets are lit to increase road and social safety, and seasonal accents are added to battle the long dark nights of winter.

100 years ago today, Los Angeles invented jaywalking:

"On Sat, Jan. 24, 1925...disobedient pedestrians were suddenly "jaywalkers." It was not the first jaywalking law in the US, [but] it’s the one that worked, as far as drivers were concerned. And it is the ancestor of such laws nationwide."

How a century-old traffic ordinance paved the way for L.A.’s deadly streets L.A.’s pivotal 1925 traffic ordinance gave cars priority on public roads and became a nationwide template. Pedestrians are still paying a deadly price.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of a L.A. traffic ordinance that reshaped public space in the city and across the U.S.

I spoke with historian Peter Norton (@norton.bsky.social) about how the auto industry helped limit pedestrian access to streets, paving the fast, deadly roads we navigate today.

Officers from #GMPTransportUnit stopped this Tesla Cybertruck in Whitefield last night. The driver was a permanent UK resident but the vehicle was registered and insured abroad which is prohibited in the UK. The Tesla Cybertruck is not road legal in the UK and does not hold a certificate of conformity. Whilst this may seem trivial to some, legitimate concerns exist around the safety of other road users or pedestrians if they were involved in a collision with a Cybertruck. The vehicle was subsequently seized under S165 of the Road Traffic Act and the driver reported.

Thank you to Greater Manchester Police for helping keep vulnerable road users safe from this.

There's a reason Tesla Cybertrucks are not legal in the UK and Europe; Cybertrucks present acute dangers to pedestrians and don’t meet European safety standards.

The vehicle has been seized.
