Wooden pram shaped like a small clinker-built boat, mounted on four spoked wheels. Brown hull with iron framework and ivory-coloured handles at each end.

For the baby who liked to travel in style—by land and sea.

It’s a beautiful example of Victorian ingenuity, personal craftsmanship, and the tendency of proud parents to go slightly overboard.

✨ Physics & Glass ✨

Now on at the Whipple Museum, Physics & Glass is a tribute to the art of the scientific glassblower. Glass has been one of the most important materials in the history of physics, and this display highlights some of the most intricate pieces in the Whipple’s collection.

Display cases in the Whipple museum with a display of physics glassware against a black background, including bulbous x-ray tubes, Crookes’ tubes containing shell and glass targets and discharge tubes with incredibly fine joins

I will never not find glass mesmerising.

@whipplemuseum.bsky.social new display in progress

Sometimes the Moon passes directly in front of the beautiful Pleiades star cluster in a celestial event called an occultation! This composite image from Spain captures the Moon's visit. These monthly occultations last until 2029, then not again until 2042!

View of part of the exhibition in the Whipple Museum’s main gallery: cases containing apparatus with large black and white photographs of the laboratory on the wall above Glass cathode ray tube with bulb at end, displayed on mount in exhibition. This is one of the tubes used by JJ Thomson in his experiments that led to the discovery of the electron in 1897. Neutron chamber - part of the apparatus used by James Chadwick to establish the existence of the neutron. A modest looking metal cylinder in a wooden mount with sealing wax stains, displayed on top of a wooden instrument box. Detail of display case focusing on James Clerk Maxwell and the founding of the Cavendish Laboratory. In the foreground is the ring shaped model with white beads designed by Maxwell to demonstrate his theory that Saturn’s rings are made of particles. Main focus of shot is a magnetometer, the first instrument newcomers to the Lab were challenged to use.

Today was the last day of our Cavendish Laboratory & the Birth of the Atomic Age exhibition at @whipplemuseum.bsky.social - privilege to look after these icons while @cambridgephysics.bsky.social moved into their new building. Thanks to everyone who made it possible and came to visit.
