It’s unrealistic for readers to pay hundreds a year to get a wide range of reporting. And everyone thinks they can do without the machinery of big media—Fact checkers! Copy editors! Editors who challenge ideas and don’t let writers just hit “send” on a first draft!—but…most of us really shouldn’t.
