One of the biggest challenges of working in a mature forest is sampling leaves from the canopy- view taken from 20m up in a #norwayspruce forest π We are sampling for pigments and LeafPsi to document the warm and dry conditions in Norway. Credit to Mathias Amundsen for climbing πͺ and video

Hi Bob, it's tricky to manage since both point dendrometers require you to drill into the tree, it's hard to know if this will create artifacts in the growth, hence the offset. Then if we keep them in alignment but increase the spacing, it may well also result in different values! Insights welcome!
24.04.2025 19:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is quite opportunistic so only one species (and also, its Norway so Norway spruce π ). We should definitely compare results though, I think there are others too that have multiple types on the same tree. Definitely worth some investigation!
24.04.2025 08:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's still super powerful data! I just saw a dataset from those type of dendrometers read every 2 weeks for 10+ years and they beautifully document tree decline before mortality (the work involved though π±)!

04.04.2025 06:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hi Andrew, unfortunately we are only a small team so there is a limit to what we can measure (collaboration always welcome π) but we are at least planning to assess overall tree condition including an assessment of cone production. Do you have any protocols that you could recommend? Cheers!
